Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruises and Toursare one of the top attractions I recommend for tourists and locals alike when visiting downtown Chicago in the summer.  It offers a chance to see Chicago from a different perspective and is relatively cheap for entertainment. It is a great stay-cation activity this summer, and it is a local activity that is fun, relatively cheap and kid/family friendly. Here are my recommendations for summer fun in Chicago:

1. The Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise – This is a very popular Chicago River boat tour because Chicago is known for the great mid century and art deco architecture downtown. This Chicago River Cruise lasts about one and a half hours and costs $28 per person. The views of Chicago from the Chicago River are different than anywhere else in the city downtown. Looking up at the buildings that line the river is almost like walking back in history. The hosts of the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Tours always have the background, dates and interesting stories about these buildings you see.

They give you the background and history on why the buildings are as they are today and what companies and purposes they had back in the day that is entertaining even if you are a local tourist. A lot has changed in Chicago over the decades, but the architecture is one of the few things that stays the same. This tour tells you the history of why things are they way they are and who built this great city. Look to the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s web sitefor tickets, tour dates and times and what events are happening in conjunction with the tours coming up this month. architecture.org The starting point for the tour is on the corner of Wacker Drive and Michigan Avenue downtown near the loop. Check out the tour this summer, they run until November when the boats stop running for the winter.

These are the updates I just got about Memorial Day Parade and Street Closures in Chicago. If you are planning on attending the Chicago Memorial Day Parade, The JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge Race, The Memorial March, or the Bike the Drive event, check this list first to find out where the streets are closed and where/when the events happen. J. P. MORGAN CHASE CORPORATE CHALLENGE (3.5 miles) on Thursday, 21 May 09, 6pm – 10pm:

This event site will be in Grant Park, Lower Hutchinson Field.

The run will take place on Columbus Drive from Roosevelt Rd to Wacker Drive.

Start time for the run is at 7:10 pm.

Columbus will close at 6:30 pm – 10:30 pm from Roosevelt Rd to Balbo.

Columbus from Balbo to Wacker Drive, as well as the east west streets in this area will remain open for as long as possible to allow for the end of rush hour traffic.

The on site CPD Commander will give the order to close the streets shortly before the race begins.

At the end of the race, as soon as it is safe to do so, Columbus from Balbo to Wacker Drive and the east west streets in the area will be opened.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE on Saturday, 23 May 09:

The parade route is from Wacker Drive to Van Buren on State Street, step off 12 noon.

State Street and the east west streets along the route will close at 11:30 am.

Wacker Drive will be closed for staging from Wabash to Lake Street at 8:00 am.

Van Buren will be closed for vehicles and disbanding from Michigan to Franklin at 8:00 am.

The parade will last approximately 2 hours and streets will be opened to traffic as soon as it is safe.

BIKE THE DRIVE on Sunday, 24 May 09:

The event site will be in Grant Park, Butler Field the bike route is on Lake Shore Drive.

Lake Shore Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic from 5:00 am to 10:30 am from Hollywood to 63rd Street.

AMERICANS FOR LIFE, LIFE MEMORIAL MARCH on Friday, 22 May 09:

This group will meet at the Thompson Center Plaza; the march will step off at 11:30 am.

A group of 2000 to 3000 people will march south on Clark St to Adams, east on Adams into Federal Plaza.

The group will hold a rally at Federal plaza until approximately 2:30 pm.

During the march traffic will be affected from Wacker Drive to Jackson and State to LaSalle.

As soon as it is safe, streets will be opened to traffic.

Rock out with your _ out.

Lollapalooza Tickets are on Sale now! The Lollapalooza 2009 tickets went on sale today and are available at variable prices with the first come first served lowest price model. Here is how it works. Right now the early bird 3-day pass is $175. That is a great deal for 3 whole days and nights of concerts and bands. Then when those sell out, the advance tickets will be available at $190 each. Then when those advance Lollapalooza 2009 tickets sell out the price may go over $250. Then when all the tickets are sold out (in July) the re-sellers start charging around $350 for 3 day passes. If you are a rich exec or company looking to get VIP access those VIP Tickets are $850! (YIKES!)

It is in your own best interest to go over to the Lollapalooza.com site and buy the tickets now and get them for around 1/2 price as an early bird. They get sent in the mail closer to the concert festival date so you don’t have to worry if you forget about them, and you don’t have to save up a ton of money later in the summer when there are lots of events going on that fill up the budget.

In this economy I think that the regular Lollapalooza tickets will probably still sell out since it’s such a festival about all kinds of people, music and ideas. People will still want to come together and be a part of the music because it is a unique experience (some call it a big hippie-fest) they can’t find anywhere else. It’s worth it to cut out other high priced items and keep Lollapalooza on your summer todo list or keep it on the agenda to travel to Chicago to see.

The concerts are usually from very popular bands and singers also so most everyone finds a few bands they love and a few new groups they have not heard of yet that they discover. (although somewhat less discovery these days) The lineup for 2009 has not been announced yet, but it is usually expected to have some of the biggest names in music on it. Check back for more details when they become available.

The Odyssey Dinner Boat Cruises on Lake Michigan in Chicago are well known for providing an elegant evening on the lake with a spectacular view of the city of Chicago. When we got a chance to take one this weekend and have a night out we jumped at the chance. My fiance and I couldn’t remember the last time we had been out on a date night since we got engaged. The Chicago Odyssey Dinner Cruise was just what we needed among the crazy wedding planning we are managing right now. Here is a review of our experiences on the Odyssey Dinner Cruise this past Saturday night in Chicago.

Boarding Time: 6:30 pm

Cruise Starts: 7:30 pm

Dinner: 8PM

Jazz Music/Dancing: throughout

Cost:  Saturday Night Dinner Cruises start at $92. This may seem like a lot of money, but there are many restaurants in the city that cost a lot more than that and don’t provide this kind of unique experience.

The weather started out rainy so we were not sure we would have much of a view on the Chicago Odyssey Cruise ship that evening, but we drove to Navy Pier anyway in hopes of a romantic evening away from everything stressful happening right now. We read that the dress code was somewhat formal and Steve actually pulled out a suit jacket to wear. The location was easy to find, we parked in the Navy Pier garage and the Chicago Odyssey Boat was docked right on the other side of the pier from where we parked by the #5 doors.  The cruise ship looked just like the pictures, big white modern looking boat with black windows. 

The rain was disappointing but when you are on a large boat for 800 people you don’t even know it’s raining outside. The interior was surprising, no communal tables or big buffets. The level we were set up on was a very elegant restaurant setting with individual tables and we sat right by the window to see the view perfectly. The meal was a 4 course meal which was very good. The appetizers, salad, main course and desert were all very good. The chicken I had as the main course was a bit heavy but Steve really enjoyed his steak and the cobbler for desert was amazing. I don’t think that people view the Odyssey or any of the Chicago Skyline Cruises as a big floating four star full service restaurant, but they really are.

The cruise started out with a champagne cocktail hour while people were boarding. Then we switched to diet pepsi so we would stay awake since we live sleep deprived lives at this point. The coffee later in the evening was also a welcome perk of caffeine. There was a full bar available though with all the amenities you would expect from a restaurant of this caliber.

The dining room on the Odyssey is really as nice as a fine dining restaurant.

The Chicago Odyssey Boat Tour Cruise also had a very nice 3 piece jazz band playing sets on the boat during the entire time we were there. They covered everything from smooth jazz to classic Sinatra standards and finished out the evening with an energetic rendition of Sweet Home Chicago. I think they are wise to have good quality music on a cruise of Chicago’s skyline. People in Chicago know their music and jazz and the couple next to us was commenting how the music was genuine jazz played well.

Our server was very attentive and the service all around was very good the entire time we were on the ship. We were still invited to go upstairs and view the skyline from the top deck of the ship even in the poor weather and the server even offered an umbrella if we needed it. I think having separate levels and rooms on this ship is a key to it’s success. There was a college honor society party on the 2nd level and a high school party on the 3rd and we never really came in contact with any of the immaturity you would expect from those younger crowds during the trip. I am sure that all the couples that were in that dining room were happy to be in a separate room also. 

We were surprised at the variety of events that people were celebrating on the Odyssey Cruise Ship that night. They make a special effort to find out what event you are celebrating and make it special. They announced people’s anniversaries and birthdays as well as had special birthday desert cakes with candles. They try and go out of the way to make your 3 hours on the lake a special and memorable experience.

We found that the Odyssey Ships don’t go far from the shore on to Lake Michigan (which is nice for the view), they initially turned south to view the city and then looped back north a few times cycling back and forth from the museum campus to Navy Pier. We did go up on the top deck and saw a beautiful view of Chicago (under a light fog) and of Navy Pier. Some HS kids were smoking up there but were just hanging out.

I can imagine how cool it must be for a high school or college student to take a date, or have a dance on Lake Michigan on a boat like this, especially if you’re from the suburbs.  It is like their first night out as adults and most of the kids looked like they took it pretty seriously. The rest of the crowd seemed like they were a mix of young couples celebrating birthdays and mid-aged people on anniversaries. One group was a girls night out all the way from Tennessee. I could see this as a great way for people traveling from other cities to really get to see Chicago and have an elegant dinner at the same time. I can also see the appeal for couples with kids to get away for the evening and go on a cruise like this just to relax and enjoy each-other’s company.

My overall experience surpassed my expectations on the Chicago Odyssey Dinner Cruise on Lake Michigan andI can confidently recommend the experience for anyone looking for an elegant night out in Chicago or someone looking for tourist suggestions for enjoying a vacation in Chicago. The spring-summer-fall seasons are probably better weather than the first week in March but it is possible to go on these scenic dinner cruises almost any time of year and we’re glad we got to get away this weekend regardless of the weather.

Everyone loves a good party and this year the recession has compelled more people to stay home and party for the Oscars with their neighbors and TV than in years past. The superbowl was a great example of people staying in, having a house party, bringing pot -luck dining items and enjoying the evening spectacle on DVR. The Oscars are always a very entertaining telecast and this year with Hugh Jackman hosting there will likely be lots of singing and dancing as well.

I think the Oscars will be entertaining whether you go out or stay in this year. Watching the Oscars at a posh party in Chicago is nice, although you will have a hard time justifying $150 ticket prices in the recession. Chicago Oscars house parties will be very popular this year and here are some tips for making yours fun. Remember that creativity is what really makes your Oscar party fun and not necessarily how much money you spend.

Chicago Weekend Fun’s Oscar House Party Tips

:

1. Dress up. Seriously. Don’t buy anything new, just raid the closet and dress up fancy as if you were attending a formal Oscar party. Some people also take more of a character theme to party costumes and tell guests to dress up as their favorite movie character.

2. Champagne, or in most cases, use the champagne glasses with ginger ale soda and voila, it’s a lot cheaper and nobody gets drunk before the end of the loooong Oscars broadcast and has to figure out how to drive home.

3. Liveblog the telecast on your blog, or twitter your reactions to what is happening on the Oscars telecast online. Some snark may make that pretty popular with guests and your online friends if it is a “virtual” party.

4. Invite the neighbors, friends, family. People enjoy getting together the more people the merrier. It proves that just sticking together helps in a recession like this. Pull all the chairs into the TV room for seating to watch the Oscars and put the food in another room so people don’t chat in the room where people are actually watching the show. Interesting mixes of people from different areas of your life make the most interesting parties.

The International Kennel Club of Chicago hosts it’s annual dog show this weekend at McCormick Place in Chicago. The Dog Show runs from February 18th through February 22nd at McCormick Place West 2301 S. Martin Luther King Drive, Chicago, IL 60616.

Tickets are $13 (adults) and $17 for Parking for anyone who would like to be a spectator to this grand event. The International Kennel Club of Chicago’s annual Dog Show is a Westminster Dog Show-like event right here in Chicago with the same level of professionalism in dog breeders.

Many people attend this show even if they aren’t a breeder or dog owner. There is no denying the beauty of the dogs and their breeds. If you are looking for a pet, you may even find the International Kennel Club Dog Show to be informative about the different breeds while showcasing over 10,000 dogs.

This weekend Kennel Club Dog Show is the place to be to see everything from award winning Labradors to stately Irish wolfhounds and American favorites like golden retrievers and greyhounds. All sizes and breeds will be featured from toy breeds (toy poodles, chihuas) to working dogs and terriers (like Barney the former first family’s dog). Come out to the dog show with the family for a day of entertainment, awards and education.

It is that time of year again, Tax Preparation Season in Chicago. (it can ruin many weekends before April 15th) You get through Christmas and the Super Bowl and very quietly your 1099’s sneak up on you when you aren’t looking. Tax Preparation in Chicago can be just as challenging as any other location in the US and it is a lot harder to make the trek out to an accountant when it is below zero here.

The tax season is a different process for everyone. Whether you use a paper form 1040 EZ, an online form, TurboTax, H&R Block TaxCut, go to a tax preparing service like Jackson Hewitt or H&R Block or have your own personal accountant, there are deductions your should know about.

Personally I got to use the energy credit for new energy star windows last year which was thrilling considering how much they cost up front. I also started using TurboTax a few years ago and have enjoyed doing my taxes online with their Q & A format. I actually don’t dread doing my taxes anymore thanks to TurboTax.

I actually think the ads that say an accountant will find you thousands of dollars in refunds is a bit misleading. The people who own businesses and have complicated situations may find more deductions with H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt, but someone single and uncomplicated like me does just fine with an online tax preparation program.

Here are some tips and resources to help you through the tax season in Chicago for 2008 in 2009. I do need to state that I am not a tax professional by any means, but through some research I was able to find these tips that I wanted to share.

This is a helpful list of green tax credits you can claim in 2009.

$150 for some Energy Star furnaces/boilers
$200 for all Energy Star windows
$300 for some Energy Star heat pumps and central AC
$500 for insulation and sealing that meets model building code
$3,150 for the purchase of a hybrid car or SUV

Also, the federal limit in tax credits for home improvements is $500. More information on state tax credits can be found at the Database of State Incentives for Renewable and Efficiency.

This is also a list of common income tax deductions that are often missed:

1. State sales taxes as a deductions.This only applies if you live in a state without income tax like Oregon but work in a state that does have it like Washington. Keep track of these expenses during the year by saving receipts or logging them in Excel.
2. Reinvested dividends. This is more of a tax break since those dividends never got taxed. Bonus!
3. Out-of-pocket deductible charitable contributions. This includes mileage driven for charity and cash donations.
4. Deductible Student loan interest paid by parents. Since the IRS treats student loan repayments by parents as a gift to their child, students that aren’t claimed as dependents can actually deduct up to $2,500 of the loan interest paid by their parents.
5. Moving expense to take your first job. As long as you move more than 50 miles, you can deduct the cost of getting yourself and your stuff to the new locale. You can even deduct mileage.
6. Military reservists travel expenses. Members of the National Guard or military reserve can deduct travel expenses related to drills or meetings as long as they travel over 100 miles and are away overnight. The deduction covers the cost of lodging plus half the cost of your meals. You can also deduct mileage, parking fees, and tolls.
7. Child-care credits. If you pay someone to take care of your kids such that you can work, you might qualify for a tax credit. Note that this is true even if you claim your childcare-related expenses through a tax-favored reimbursement account at work because such accounts are capped at $5,000 while expenses up to $6,000 can qualify for the credit.
8. Estate tax on income in respect of a decedent. You can get an income-tax deduction for the amount of estate tax paid on an IRA the you inherit from someone else.
9. Any State tax you paid last spring. If you owed state taxes when you filed your 2007 return, you can deduct that amount along with the state income taxes that were withheld during 2008.
10. Deductible Mortgage Refinancing points. Any points that you pay when you refinance can be deducted (on a monthly basis) over the life of the new loan. Moreover, all unamortized mortgage points left over from prior years are deducted all at once if you end up refinancing your mortgage in any particular year.
11. Jury pay paid to employer. Some employers continue to pay their employees’ full salary when they’re on jury duty, but require that the employees turn over their jury pay. Since the IRS views this as taxable income, you need to be sure to deduct it. If you don’t, you’ll end up paying double taxes on a portion of your income.
     

President’s Day is observed on February 16. I won’t be at work that day, like most people who have the day off, I will be honoring our first presidents by shopping at the President’s Day Sales around Chicagoland. Wouldn’t they be proud?

All the local Chicago stores are starting their ramp up of ads for that holiday and if you are holding off on buying something because of the recession, you may want to go shopping on President’s Day because the stores are cutting prices and have everything on sale.

President’s Day is much like Christmas this year where Chicago retailers just want to make sales so they are cutting prices and discounting everything in the store. You can get great deals on clothing, furniture, housewares, carpet, mattresses and even cars. GM, Ford, Toyota and Honda are trying to talk anyone into buying a car off their lot. One dealer even advertised a buy one get one free sale. (it was a Chrysler dealer)

I would expect a lot to be on sale from their clothing departments to clear out the last of the winter clothes since spring merchandise is coming in soon and Jewelry will be on sale since Macy’s just took over the jewelry section of the store from a jeweler that was leasing it at the State Street Store. This may have been the case at other former Marshall Field’s Stores also.

Furniture – Ashley Furniture, Harlem Furniture and LaZBoy all have sales planned. If you have lots of savings and a good job while you have a ratty old sofa, it might be time to go looking. IKEA Chicago also has a $150 cash back deal going on mattresses in their Schaumburg and Bolingbrook locations.

Chicago has had some comic shows rotate through town every so often but it has been a while since local comic fans had a large scale event here to attend locally. It is exciting to know that the majority of web and tech workers in the Chicago area will be happy to know that the Chicago Comic Book and Entertainment Show is coming to McCormick Place in Chicago in 2010. (or C2E2 as they call it)

It is more than a full year off, but all geeks rejoice because they will be able to bring out their costumes and partay in 2010. Ok, not everyone who likes comics has a costume, but several people I know do.

I am also surprised at how mainstream comic books are these days and how not-geeky this has become since the popularity of Spider man movies, BatMan movies and especially the Iron Man movie this past summer. There is a huge audience for this event in Chicago and I may even be going myself with my fiance since he and all his friends are big fans also.

The Chicago Comic Book & Entertainment Show details are:

April 16-18, 2010, at McCormick Place’s Lakeside Center

Hopefully this will be as good a show as the New York comicon shows since it is being organized by the same trade show company Reed Exhibitons. They can start by inviting the entire improv community at IO and Second City’s training centers. Then they can hang out at the comic shops and recruit more attendees there. I just know there are probably several hundred thousand people in Chicagoland (out of 9 million) who are comic book fans and collectors. When I find more details I will update this page. With the Fed lowering the interest rate to effectively 0% a few weeks back we have all been waiting to see how the consumer mortgage rates will be affected in Chicago. Both the city and suburbs have been affected by the real estate housing bubble and many people who have 6-7% mortgage rates on their homes and condos would love to refinance their mortgage and save some money in this economy.

Just this week Jan 12th, marketwatch reported that 30 year fixed rate mortgage rates went below 5% and down to the lowest rate ever. I am surprised that they have gotten so low and see that marketwatch lists the average mortgage rate for a 30 year fixed rate loan at 4.62% now. Wow that is low. A 300K mortgage with 20% down and a 30 year fixed rate loan at 4.62% is $1,333.00 a month.

If that rate was 5.62% it would be $1,481.00. Low rates save you a lot of money and allow you to use those savings to make extra principle payments and pay the loan off faster which saves a lot on interest paid to the bank over the life of the loan. (remember interest is calculated on the entire loan amount each year, so the amount you really pay for your house over 30 years is usually about 3x the value)

I am not sure which mortgage companies in Chicago can offer these rates though because so many of the banks are in trouble financially right now. Taking in less profit on loans would hurt their chance of recovery. Citigroup Banks is one that is giving higher interest rates like 5.5% on a 30 year fixed loan because of their current financial situation.

I hope that people living in Chicago can refinance their loans at the lowest rate possible and pay off their mortgage home loans quickly and own them outright. It is a difficult thing to do but owning your own home without a mortgage is one of the most rewarding things you can do and gives you so much financial freedom and saves a lot of stress. Look into how you can lower your interest rate and pay off your loan in a shorter time and get freedom from mortgage payments.

Chicago got more snow today and has a forecast of snow every day this week along with below zero temperatures. All this is after getting a foot of snow on this past Saturday and snow on Thursday before that. (January 2009) The snowfall was above average last year in 2007-2008 also (with 60.3 inches of snow at O’Hare Airport!). 

Chicago got snow once or twice most weeks between November 2007 and April 2008. I can’t tell you how many times I had to shovel/dig a path out of the alley in order to drive to the store last winter. This above average snowfall has made travel difficult although being Chicagoans, we still try and drive through just about any weather conditions.

Since this has been such a constant trend for the last 2 winters I decided to  look up some statistics and find out how rare it is that we get this kind of snowfall in Chicago, because so many people have been talking about 1979 lately and tuning in to Tom Skilling on WGN Channel 9 for their nightly snow/blizzard/weather update.

I am also curious as to why the snowfall amount has increased so dramatically in Chicago the last two years. Is it climate change modifying how the weather patterns travel? Is it just a weird weather anomaly? I haven’t been able to find a comprehensive answer to that question yet, if I find one, I will update this page and let you know.

Some fun weather statistics:

The National Weather Service says that the most snow that has ever fallen on Chicago in a winter season is 89.7 inches in 1978-1979. They also mention that the average amount of snow that Chicago recieved between 1971 and the year 2000 was 38 inches. (the least was 9.8 inches in 1920-1921) This is interesting because as of tonight Chicago has received 38 inches of snowfall for the 2008-2009 season already and it is only January 13.

This might be a bit geeky but, the graph above (from the site Graphical Climatology of Chicago) shows the average snowfall in a season with the line and the amount we have received to date in 2008-2009 in the filled in bar graph area.

This is interesting because it shows that we have passed the usual yearly average as of today. I wonder if we will beat the all time high for snowfall in Chicago by the end of the season in June?

At this rate I think the winter of 2008-2009 could have about 60 inches of snow like last year, but since there is no reliable way for anyone to estimate this, we will just have to wait and see and update this page as the year and winter continue. Every winter people all over Chicagoland huddle around their TV sets to watch the 2 best teams in the NFL go for the Super Bowl win regardless of if our Bears are in the game or not. We still enjoy seeing a good football game with any of the teams and throwing a big Superbowl party to celebrate. My ideas for Superbowl recipes had gotten a bit stale so I did some research for some new ideas and recipes this year in 2009.

Some of my friends enjoy going to one of the many local sports bars to enjoy the camaraderie of a full bar cheering and others like to gather with friends and family and watch the Super Bowl at home. Either way you get the glory of the game and (sometimes) the entertainment of the commercials. (there have been a lot of weird and not-at-all-funny commercials in the last few years)

With the economy doing so poorly this year I am guessing more people will be planning on watching the big Superbowl game at home in 2009. This means that you may have to dig up some recipes for munchies for guests or just for your own kids and family. Here are some non-typical recipes and ideas for  while watching the big Super Bowl game on TV this year.

1. Here is a chocolate treat recipe I red about on a friend’s blog that I think would be very appropriate for a Super Bowl event. Take 2 wheat thins and make a peanut butter sandwich out of them, then dip it in melted chocolate (like a chocolate fountain you may have lying around from 2006 or a Hershey’s kiss fondue pot) It’s a yummy snack attack!

2. If you have a more cultured crowd coming to watch the game try this recipe for baked brie recipe with jam. Take a grocery store pre-made puff pastry and lay out on a cookie sheet. Lay a wedge or round of Brie cheese on top and then spread jam (raspberry works well) on top.  Close up the pie crust over the brie, drizle with maple syrup and sprinkle with a handful of brown sugar. Bake at 350 degrees in the oven for 25-30 minutes until pastry is golden. Let sit and cool for 10 min before serving with crackers and apple wedges. (and wine)

3. Another great crowd pleasing dip recipe is Superbowl BLT Dip. This is great with anything from veggies to crackers to kettle cooked potato chips. Take 4 cooked slices bacon, 3 green onions sliced, 1 cup mayo, 1 cup lowfat greek yogurt, 1/4 cup arugula chopped in a food processor and pulse until chunky. Stir in crumbled bacon and 1 pint chopped grape tomatoes.

4. Use this Superbowl time together with family and friends to catch up. The guys may be glued to the TV and the game but most women I know use the time during the game and during the commercials to chat, catch up and spend some quality time with friends. It is rare that you can see everyone socially during the holidays because of crazy schedules, the Super Bowl is a great time to see some of the people you may have missed or re-unite family that was going in different directions during the holidays.

5. Get Kids involved in the superbowl game by  making a football themed obstacle course throughout the rooms where the TV is not on. It gets the kids up off the couch at least at the commercial breaks and gets them some exercise. Try the running in tires move (with something like hula hoops), the jump over the back of the couch and land on your belly on the cushions move and the run in between a slalom pattern to get them going. They can even time themselves and see who gets the best time. This is also best supervised since you never know what may happen when kids get wound up.

6. Skip the company Superbowl football pool. In a recession like this, who has $20 to throw away anyway? It always ends up that one of the hard core sorts guys gets the best squares and wins. Keep that $20 in the bank for a rainy day this year.

7. Give prizes for best Superbowl football fan wear. Pick the team you will be following in the game and dress to impress with fan colors and gear if you have it. Kids may even want to face paint the number of their favorite player or go 1/2 and 1/2 with the colors of their team on their face or in hair coloring. (hair coloring seems more common for kids these days and in most cases is temporary). You can make a trophy out of tin foil and a small cardboard box for the winner.  

I got my Digital TV converter box this summer (with the $40 credit coupon) and I love it. Here is how to get your TV Converter Box Coupon and get your signal converter box hooked up to your TV before the transition happens on February 17th, 2009.

First though you may not need a digital converter box for your TV if you fit into these situations: 1. Over half of the population gets Cable so those people don’t have to worry about the Broadcast TV Signals changing over from Analog to Digital on February 17, 2009. The rest of us still do!(Some people might first object to the fact that I don’t get cable, but in this internet age why do I need it? The basics of free TV are just fine for me.) 2. If you bought your TV in the last year and a half it probably already accepts a digital signal with nothing new to add to it. (HDTV qualifies) (Personally, I did not want to replace my 2002 edition TV with a new digital TV since it really works fine and I don’t watch TV that much to warrant a $500 purchase anyway.)

So in summary, if you don’t have a digital TV, or cable TV, you will need to buy a very simple signal converter box before February 17, 2009. I recommend getting one now before they are sold out. These Digital TV converter Boxes are sold at most appliance and electronics stores, I got mine at Best Buy. (also be available at bestbuy.com)  

The trick is not to pay full price for the digital converter box and get one using the government sponsored coupon. After the $40 discount from this coupon I paid $25 for my box. That seemed like an affordable price to me for a small digital black box that is about 10 inches x 10 inches x 2 inches tall. You can go to dtv2009.govand sign up for a coupon to be mailed to you within a few weeks. I got mine in about a month. It looked like a credit card or a gift card and it was easy to swipe it like a credit card when I made the purchase at Best Buy.

Connecting the digital converter box to my TV was easy too. Dtvanswers.com has a great FAQ section that can help if you get stuck but the basic idea is that the digital signal converter box goes between your existing TV antenna and your TV. Yes, the same old antenna works to receive the digital signal, my parent’s attic antenna from 1968 works as does my 2002 rabbit ears antenna, it’s just the TVs that can’t receiver the signal, so we get converter boxes to help.

Take the Antenna cable from the TV and plug it into the converter box and then use the converter box cable to connect it to the TV. (the VCR goes in between the TV and the converter box if you still use one, see diagram) There is also a power cord to plug in. When you get your converter box it will also come with a new remote for the box. I have to leave my TV on channel 3 now and use the converter box remote to change channels there to get the digital channels. The new remote turns on the TV and the converter box and can adjust volume too.

I like the digital channels better than the old analog ones because there are more of them and there are more programs available now. I also have no problem with signal reception now although my parents live way out in the suburbs and have some trouble getting digital signals in bad weather or just at random times. When the signal is low the screen gets all pixelated and computer like. Which is kinda sci-fi future movie creepy but it doesn’t happen very often for me. It happens once or twice a week for my parents in Downers Grove though.

So, instead of watching ABC Channel 7 in Chicago I can now see 7.1, 7.2 or 7.3. Same for NBC 5, it is 5.1, 5.2 or 5.3 with widescreen and cropped screen views as well as a 24/7 weather and news summary channel. Sometimes 5 and 7 also re-run the noon or 10 pm news on the .2 channels or run other programs from other regions which are interesting.

WTTW Channel 11 has used the digital signals to diversify the most with the regular programming on 11.1, digital wide screen on 11.2, a new content channel called Create of all cooking and “how-to” shows on 11.3 and a spanish language versions of their shows on 11.4. Channel 20 has also diversified quite a bit the same way too. Channel 2 is the laggard here with only turning on it’s digital signal in the last month and I still don’t get it most of the time.

One last thing I want to mention about this digital TV conversion process. It is easy to do for most people but it may not be easy for older people who are not tech savvy. If you have a grandparent, aunt, uncle or neighbor that doesn’t understand how to get a converter box or the coupon for one, help them out and order one and get the box for them. You should also help install it for them so they don’t loose their link to news and information every day.

TV is much more important to the people who are in their homes a lot and either can’t or don’t, go out much. It is important for weather updates and alerts and general news. With newspaper delivery going by the wayside eventually (I predict) the TV and Radio may be the ways to find out what is happening in the world for people who are older, retired and don’t use a computer.  I read that 20% of the US does not use the internet, so there are still a great number of people in this group who might need some help.

Update 1/9/08: the Government has been reporting that they are out of money from the budget they had set aside for sending out discount cupons to citizens. This is not suprising since less than half of the cupons send out to date have not been redeemed. So, if you want one, still go to the site and get on the waiting list anyway. Then they are looking at also extending the analog signal for a while longer and pushing the cut of date back a month or two to help with this transition. I hope that happens also, since a lot of people would loose their link to information and updates if they have not converted.  

Update: Congress has decided to give people four more months to prepare for the upcoming transition from analog to digital TV broadcasting. The House voted Wednesday to postpone the end of analog TV signals until June 12, 2009. The move is meant to address concerns that more than 6.5 million Americans with older TVs would not be ready by Feb. 17, the originally mandated deadline.

This is a friendly reminder that the CTA train and bus fares will increase on January 1, 2009. Even though the state of Illinois approved the budget increases last year that prevented a fare increase then, the state revenues from sales and income taxes is down in 2008 and 2009 due to the current economic recession.

So, the CTA isn’t able to get the full amount of the funding and most estimates show that CTA public transit use it still up year over year even though the price of a gallon of gas has gone back down to about $1.70 in most areas of the suburbs and just under $2.00 in Chicago.

This means that the CTA fares have to increase to cover the gap between what the expenses are and what funding is provided from the state. Plus somebody has to pay for all those station improvements they started and the shiny new website design. Most people should be highly annoyed by the increase in CTA fares but it probably won’t keep people from going to work.

My daily commute is going from $3.50 to $4.50 per day. (still far less than driving and paying $25-$35 per day to park plus gas) My CTA Chicago Card Plus monthly unlimited pass will also go from $75.00 to $86.00. Most people pay for them pre-tax through companies like Wageworks though so you do save something on not paying taxes. (in an odd twist of fate keeping the CTA from getting more state funding) All of this will seem cheap someday when I have to take both Metra AND the CTA to work.

The people hardest hit are usually low income hourly workers that make around minimum wage. ($7.75) After the taxes and health insurance fees are deducted from a paycheck (if health insurance is even available) and they buy CTA fares and possibly buy lunch at work they are left with a very small amount of money each day.  I would guess about $800 per month is left for everything else from rent to utilities after “work costs” are considered. (plus uniforms are usually required to purchase) It is a meager life.

The emails are arriving in my inbox already for Day After Christmas Sales at stores in Chicago. It wasn’t even Christmas day yet and the stores had already planned out how they will discount the merchandise to help you find a great deal on anything you did not already get this Christmas. The day after Christmas sales are also a common destination of you really need to return those purple socks or snake print sweater you got as a gift this Christmas. Some of the after Christmas sales I have gotten info about are:

JC Penny has a big after Christmas Sale and Clearance starting at 5:30 am Friday December 26th and Saturday December 27th. There are special door buster deals available from 5:30 am to 1 pm if you are an early bird. There is also a store wide 60% off clearance sale. This does not mean everything is on sale in the store but a lot of the seasonal items like clothing or home decor should be marked down. There are 2 printable coupons on their site you can use to get an extra $15 off $75 or $10 off $50. AND there is 50%-70% off at JCP.com.

Kohl’sis going head to head with JC Penny to capture that middle class market and they also have big sales planned for Friday December 26th and Saturday December 27. Almost everything from clothing and apparel for the entire family and all holiday home decor is 50%-80% off at Kohl’s after Christmas sale and clearance. The items may be subject to availability though since we didn’t have an easy time finding boots this winter at Kohl’s they seem to frequently sell out of popular items.

Best Buyhas a very merry Christmas sale going all weekend long from Friday December 26 through Sunday December 28. Check Best Buy for their Christmas sale items like TVs, dvds, wireless digital photo frames and home appliances. This is not a sale in stores though. Check bestbuy.com for details.

Crate and Barrelhas a day after Christmas sale going with 70% off on all of their holiday decor and many specialty items for the season. See here for a link to the Crate and Barrel sale page. I am a big fan of Crate and Barrel Christmas ornaments, home decor and wrapping. If you can get these holiday decorations or housewares (glasses, baking equipment, pillows, candle holders, festive swags, rugs) at a large discount now and save them for next year you might just come out ahead in your 2009 budget.

Old Navy also has a lot of great clothing, sweaters, jeans and t-shirts on sale at 75% off. Old Navyis one of my favorite stores for getting the same basic clothes as more expensive stores, and half the cost. And when the clothing is on sale, it is the most affordable time of the year to buy. So, if you have birthdays in the next 2 months or so to buy for or need anything yourself that you didn’t get to buy before Christmas, check them out online or in the stores. (personally I think clothing is better to shop for in person since it is so dependent on fit and you have to try everything on to know it will work before you buy) They have women’s cashmere cardigans on sale for $35.00 right now. That is a great deal.

Lastly, check out Macy’s for some additional discounts (15%) on purchases made online with the promo code SAVEMORE. There are already discounts of 20%-6% on a lot of clothing and merchandise. I have found that Macy’s does have good deals if you hunt for them. I got some great women’s turtleneck sweaters as gifts last week at 1/2 price of $20. You just have to be careful because there are a lot of items not on sale mixed in too. Macy’s has done a lot of business this holiday with promo codes, discounts and free shipping deals, so make sure that if you shop there you are getting to take advantage of them.

Since I will have the week off next week and many kids are off from school I thought some Christmas Craft Ideas might be helpful and useful to the readers of Chicago Weekend Fun. (cat toys, origami snowflakes ornaments, garlands and chocolate covered strawberries) 

I am not an expert crafter like Martha Stewart but I have enjoyed my fair share of craft projects over the years. I think the fascination starts when you are a young girl in Brownies and Indian Princesses and all the projects are crafts. Popsicle sticks, rick rack, origami and felt come together with sequins and glue to make some great christmas ornaments and kid masterpieces.

Right now crafts are also popular because you can make decorations and gifts at home for less money that you would buying in stores. The use what you have philosophy is big right now with the recession and economic troubles. That said, I enjoy a good craft project whether it is a recession or not. Here are some recent craft projects I have done that you may enjoy too.

1. Catnip Felt Cat Toys- This is an easy inexpensive gift for people who have cats and want the kitty to get something for Christmas too. Felt is cheap and available for $.25 or $.50 per 8 x 11 inch at most craft or fabric stores. I got mine at Blick art supply and Hancock Fabrics because I wanted a lot of different colors.

You can be as elaborate or as simple as you would like with the shape of the cat nip pouch you are making. I made fortune cookie shaped catnip toys this Christmas and then sent them in Chinese food container boxes. A fortune cookie cat toy is made from a simple circle of felt folded over and sewn in 1/2. Before you close up the end, stuff it full of catnip and pack it down well. Then close up the end and fold the half circle in half again like a fortune cookie and stitch a few loops to hold it closed. Ta-da Cheap inexpensive cat fun. .

The cats don’t care what the shape is so if I am just using the 1/2 circles I call them catnip perogi. Otherwise a plain square pouch is ok too. Sewing doesn’t have to be super neat either, the simple over under stitch works well and I don’t bother to turn it inside out to hide the stitching either. The cat’s just want the catnip.

2. Wrapping paper scrap snowflakes – I hate always having small scraps of wrapping paper left over. It seems like such a waste. I read a few years ago about a way to make snowflakes from them in Martha Stewart Magazine and the instructions are actually pretty easy. It is like origami, but easier.

First take a scrap and make sure it is a perfect square. Then accordion fold the paper in 1/2 inch accordion folds. Then take a stapler and staple across the center of that thin folded bunch of paper. Next, take scissors and cut a pattern in the edges of the paper where the folds are. A pattern that cuts off some of the folded edges on both sides on the ends is always good, it lets the snowflake open more. Then unfold the snowflake ends and tape them together so the flake makes an accordion folded circle. See picture at left.

You can hang small stars or snowflakes on thechristmas tree as ornaments or hang larger ones in the window as a decoration. If you don’t like the white back to the star snowflake just make 2 and tape them together before hanging.

If you want 2 kinds of paper snowflakes, got to wikihow.com/Make-a-3D-Paper-Snowflake and they have another “how to” article that I liked although I haven’t tried this yet. A home full of hanging paper stars and snowflakes is a very festive place to have a party.

3. Home made garlands – I know this reminds people of the 70’s, but if you have that cheap basic ribbon around the house that is kind of shiny, just cut it into 2-3 inch strips and tape or glue the ends together. This can also be done with paper cut into 1 inch by 3 inch strips. It is also fun to pop popcorn and string it with a needle and thread and then decorate the trees outside with it and the birds come eat it. You have to get the string or thread out of the tree eventually but it is cute and functional for a while.

4. Ok food itn’t technically a craft. But with all the baking going on people sometimes forget how easy it is to make chocolate candy type gifts. I once used baking chocolate and some chocolate molds to make a chess set as a gift. It was a popular gift and it was not that expensive. The only thing is that baker’s chocolate isn’t quite as sweet as the milk chocolate most people are used to, so finding another brand to melt down and use might be better.

Another great easy food to make is Fudge and everyone likes getting that as a tasty gift. The basic ingredients of fudge are chocolate chips, butter and condensed sweetened milk. Some people add marshmallows or nuts to the mix and a pinch of salt but it is basically just melted and then mixed together and then put into a baking dish in the fridge to harden. Also, chocolate covered strawberries are always a big hit. Chocolate is easy to melt in the microwave (or double boiler if you happen to have one) And you just dip the strawberries in and put them on a wax paper lined cookie sheet. Then drizzle with white chocolate or nuts to finish them off before putting them in the fridge for a few hours. These only keep a few days, so make the same day as the party if possible and don’t layer on the chocolate too thick, or it is difficult to eat. This is also a yummy treat for Valentine’s Day.

5. If you like the look of crafts and like giving hand made gifts without the hours of work you can always check out Etsy.com for hand made in the USA crafts that make great gifts. They have a full range of items available that are so well done that they look just as professional as the things you would buy in stores.

We only have a few shopping days left before Christmas and this is crunch time. It is the exact point where most women finish their shopping and the the men begin their shopping. (at least it is in my house) So, is it too late to get great gifts on sale for Christmas in Chicago? 

The selection is getting low, but there are a lot of great sales at most of the major stores in Chicago at 50% or more off most gifts.  This is probably the only time of year that it pays to be on the email marketing lists for online stores. They keep sending out coupon codes daily for free shipping and extra discounts and promotions to help people feel like they are getting a good deal this year with the recession, and so that they still buy all the stock in the stores that won’t be wanted at all after December 25th.

Macy’s – a wide variety of items are marked down, but not everything. If your favorites are not marked down, skip it. Daily emails let you know what the free shipping or discount code are today.

Old Navy – their clothing is really low priced to begin with and with extra sales and discounts, it is really affordable to stock up if you have kids.

JCrew, The Gap & Banana Republic - They mark down certain colors only, so if you want the tricky colors to coordinate like yellow, orange or purple you are in luck. If you want black or navy blue, it’s still full price. This is seriously annoying and I feel like boycotting these stores sometimes because it is so unfair.

Crate and Barrel & CB2- home furnishings aren’t as important to buy in a recession, and C&B knows that. They have had more on sale than usual but everything is still expensive. C&B is still good for those gifts you really have to impress with, like bosses and in-laws.

Kohl’s & JC Penny - get 50-60% off on most clothing right now but some items are already sold out. Like winter boots. Have fun trying to find any of those. And those portable outdoor wireless speaker sets. Really popular this year and sold out everywhere.

Sears (they even have layaway like the old days) check out the deal of the day and the 70% off sale. Craftsman tools still make great gifts for dad, grandpa and brothers.

Best Buy – Some electronics are marked down, but not everything. Get grandma and grandpa that converter box they need for the digital TV signal coming in February if they haven’t already gotten one.

The Premium Outlets in Aurora, IL also have sales offering discounts on their already low outlet merchandise prices. The trick is to go in the morning though since the afternoons are really crowded and there is no parking. Maybe go as a group and carpool so you only have to bring one car? Or have dad drop you off and pick you up?

I am sure that most Chicagoans are exhausted now that the holidays have passed, but they are very excited about  Barack Obama’s Inauguration in Washington DC. (Oprah is going to attend)  A lot of Chicagoans are planning on going out to DC for the 44th President’s Inauguration on January 20, 2009 to see it in person because they are so excited. (wow that is one elaborate setup they had at the last inauguration pictured at left)

Others of us have to work at a day job and will be here in Chicago’s frigid snowy cold watching TV on that day, but I will still be thrilled to witness history. If you are considering going to Barack Obama’s Inauguration in Washington DC you might have a hard time finding tickets. I heard they are all spoken for (sold out so to speak). All 240,000 of the Inauguration Tickets were available for free but by request from your local representative or senator. So, all the requests were early and now people are turning around and selling some for very very high prices. Probably not what Barack intended.

And since a lot of the hotels are booked too, the next best choice is following along at home and having an Inauguration party of your own. (why not? the kids would love it)

Update: 12/16/08 I see there is an Inauguration Schedule, Inauguration Blog, and a lot of information already online 35 days before the event from the PIC (presidential inauguration committee). I am glad Barack’s teams are so organized and on top of things, this seems like such a change for the better in the communication department. The web teams that built all these sites for the campaigns and now after the elections have done a great job with it.

The outline of the Inaugural Schedule so far lists:

1. Barack Obama will travel by train to Washington DC on January 17, 2009 for the Inauguration. Kind of an old fashioned twist.

2. On Sunday, January 18th – The Official Inaugural Activities begin with a welcome event on Sunday in the afternoon that is available for the public to attend. (that is nice)

3. On Monday, January 19th – (it is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a National Holiday) President Elect Obama and Vice-President Elect Biden will commemorate this holiday with community involvement activities in the Washington DC area.

4. Tuesday, January 20th is the official Inauguration Day - Barack Obama and Joe Biden will participate in the Inauguration Swearing in Ceremony and events on the US Capitol steps and the 56th Inaugural Parade in addition to the Inaugural Balls in the evening.

5. On Wednesday, January 21st (after not much sleep) The President Obama and Vice President Biden will participate in a prayer service.

McCormick Place in Chicago also has a black tie event planned for Tuesday evening at $275 a ticket. This is a more upscale get a babysitter for the kids event. Both events would be great for social networking among the democratic supporters of Chicago. I am sure Chicago will be partying and celebrating up a storm on January 20th. Update: HBO will have the exclusive broadcast rights to the opening events of the inauguration. Coverage will startJanuary 18th, 2 days before the ceremony itself and will give viewers a taste of to as many events as possible.  The event will be free to all cable and satellite subscribers whether they have HBO regularly or not. (That is very nice of them)

All the major networks will cover the main inauguration event on Television on Tuesday January 20 starting at 9am and going until either 3 or 4 pm depending on the network. In Chicago this includes CBS Channel 2, NBC Channel 5, ABC Channel 7  on the free TV channels. (Why not WGN Channel 9, WTTW Channel 11 and FOX Channel 32?) Check your local listings for cable and dish channels and times.

And the Barack Obama team has just emailed a site that you can go to and watch a video from President Elect Obama and find out how to take part. President Elect Obama also suggests hosting your own neighborhood ball at home and celebrate that way. He also suggests going to USAService.org to donate your time to a public service project or charity type initiatives all over the country in honor of Martin Luther King Jr Day which is also National Service Day.

Harry Potter’s props costumes and sets will be coming to the Museum of Science and Industry Exhibition in Chicago in April 2009. The exhibition will be there through September 7th 2009. This is much like the Star Wars Exhibition that they had there in the winter of 2007-2008. The movies are so popular that Harry Potter and Star Wars bring a whole new audience to The Museum of Science and Industry and help raise awareness of the museum for tourists and visitors as well as local residents.

The following for Harry Potter Books is huge in Chicago and an entire generation grew up on these books, reading them from cover to cover over and over again. I expect the tickets to easily sell out for the first few months at the exhibit. I would also expect there to be some demonstrations in the exhibit about how the magic effects happened in the movie and some explanations of how the Harry Potter movies were made.

Tickets on sale now at the Museum of Science and Industry website; $26 for adults, $19 for children, and $25 for senior citizens. There are discounted prices for everyone during the evening hours after the museum closes which is nice since people will pretty much line up forever to see these items in person if they are superfans. And judging from how many people stood in line at bookstores at midnight to get the books each time they were published, I think this will be one of the most popular exhibits at the museum of science and industry to date.

I also think this makes a good trip activity idea for the kids over spring break or summer break in 2009. There are a lot of other educational exhibits there that you should see too if you can make it. The bodyworlds exhibit is always popular. Just stay away from the internet exhibit (ala 1997) and the automobile exhibit (ala 1985). There are some areas of the museum that need a lot of updating.

With the end of the year just around the corner, my mind has shifted from entertainment and events to the New Year’s Resolutions 2009 that we all plan to make.  I am thinking there are some New Year’s Resolutions in 2009 that Chicago should try this year too. Not just government and officials but all of us collectively as people. Well, ok some are specifically for government and elected officials since this whole Rod Blagojevich thing is out of control and so opposite how most people really are in Chicago. So, after all the New Year’s parties sit down and think about if these ideas could really improve your life and those of everyone like you in Chicago.

1. Resolve to share the power and redistribute wealth. Enough of this you pay me to do something I am legally not supposed to do bullshit. Yes, Rod Blagojevich I am looking at you, and Former Illinois Governor Ryan you too. I am guessing that Mayor Daley does this stuff ALL the time but he has enough clout that people won’t cooperate in catching him at it.

For god’s sake, if you know (work with) someone who does this kind of pay for play stuff, out them. Tell someone, tell the Tribune, Sun Times or NPR. Copy documents that verify it and send them anonymously to the press if you have to. Publish them on an anonymous blog. The only way that this behavior will stop is if people stand up to it and say no, I am not going along with this and make sure people know about it. It is your responsibility as a citizen and there are a whole lot more of us little people than there are powerful ones you know. And this was the whole point behind rallying for Barack Obama and Change. (and not just so people stopped knowing Chicago only for Al Capone, Oprah and Michael Jordan)

2. Get some more exercise. All of us, myself included could benefit from more exercise. This means walking rather than driving sometimes, going out to run once a week and generally doing things around the house to clean and fix it up. You would be surprised how much cleaning and fixing up the house can do for exercise. Walking every day to public transportation is also a great way to get exercise without knowing it. (which is pretty much the only way computer based people like me can do this) Laying off the deep dish pizza, foot long hot dogs and cold stone ice cream is probably a good idea too.

3. Save some money. Forget the economy and how 70% of the activity is from consumer spending. Just do what you need to do in order to be ready for layoffs since this is so common these days. Have 1 year of reserves in savings for daily expenses should you loose your job.

It takes a year or more for most people right now to find a new job since so many more people are looking than there are jobs. Also, have your vacation days saved up so that if they do lay you off they have to pay them out. It is the law. Most companies don’t offer any severance packages when they lay off people so your 2-3 weeks vacation time is your severance package now. Save it wisely.

4. Learn something new. This is harder the older we all get. I find it harder every year to learn something new that is an actual functional skill or knowledge useful on the job. It is just so much easier to do things the old way. It uses less energy and fewer brain cells. But you become obsolete so much faster, and in this economy that could mean a lot less money if and when you can find another job. So, whether it is community college courses, web research or just asking someone who knows cool stuff on the job if you could help out and get into a new project, it always benefits you in the long run.

This Christmas everyone is cutting back on how much money they spend on holiday gifts, festive food and Christmas decorations. I know I am looking at cheaper Christmas gift ideas when I go shopping in Chicago and plan on spending about 50% of what I normally do on Christmas Gifts. (we all need new Christmas gift ideas this year) It is a necessity with the economic crisis and the credit/liquidity crisis that is happening right now. In fact, I think spending into debt may have gotten us to expect all that constant growth so this is going to be a big adjustment over the next few years.

So as for those Christmas Gift Ideas, what gives? or what is there to buy that says Happy Holidays without breaking the bank? I think setting a budget for Christmas gift buying, per gift is the easiest way to achieve this. Then doing some research online helps you get an idea of what you would pay for a variety of items. It is free to search and look around at online stores, even to put the gift ideas in a shopping basket, but don’t check out yet! Do some comparison shopping or visit the Chicago stores in person to look at items and make sure you are getting the best deals on what you buy. Only plunk down the payment if it is a great gift at a great price.

Another element to great Christmas Gift Ideas this holiday season is to give gifts that are really useful and relevant. Some people may think this is boring, but I think it says that you care about that person and want them to really like and use the gift. There is nothing wrong with socks if they really need new socks, it is a gift that cares.

Here are some of my non-traditional Christmas Gift Ideas. Some people like them and other’s don’t but I wanted to share the info in case it was a help to your Christmas gift ideas gathering or shopping this year.

1. Hand Made Gifts- At the Renegade Craft Fair or from Etsy.com. I like hand made gifts because these days they look professionally made and they are unique unlike the millions of things shipped in from China. If you buy locally made handmade gifts you also support local businesses and artists, which is another good idea. There are so many christmas gift ideas to choose from, jewelry, home decor, knitted items and lots of artwork. This also may include food items you bake or make yourself.

2. Car Safety Kits – This is a useful gift for guys or women, it is basically a safety and get out of snow kit for your car. You buy all the pieces and put them into a Rubbermaid container to keep in the trunk of the car. You can customize it how ever you like but the main components are: A portable battery jump station, blanket, flashlight, shovel, ice scraper/brush, extra batteries for the flashlight, a crank cell phone charger if you can find one and a bag of road salt. Also a great Christmas gift idea for dads who are hard to shop for and own a less than reliable car at the moment and don’t feel like this is the right time to buy another car.

3. Warm accessories- Hats, gloves, scarves, ear muffs, boots and anything else that can keep you warm when you have to be out in the cold is a good Christmas gift idea this year. It looks to me like it is going to be a super snowy winter again by the amount of snow we have gotten already. Hats and accessories should run between $5 and $25 depending on the item and style.

4. Subscriptions & Calendars- a low cost gift idea is always subscriptions to magazines within the interests that the person has. Everyone has some interests and the magazines usually cost between $10 and $20 per year. Personally I recommend TIME magazine because it is so useful but a car guy might like HotRod better and dad might like the Chicago Tribune delivered. Likewise for theme ideas and calendars. They usually cost between $10 and $20 also and are exactly what someone needs in January. Very practical and useful.

5. Books – A great idea for Christmas gifts and kids is to share the gift of stories. You can get a lot of children’s books online at a small discount but check second hand book shops for really cheap children’s books. If you plan really early you can pick up a box of children’s books in the summer at garage sales for a few bucks. Children need to learn to read so starting by reading stories to them when they are as young as 2 really helps them get pre-reading skills and they like the stories and humor too. Regular books are good finds in used book shops too although you have to know the interests that the person has to find things. For older teens and kids a lot of 2nd hand game shops have popped up so computer and video games can be found for less. (gamestop)

6. Your Time- the ultimate gift idea is to give someone your time. Some people write out IOUs others just write in a card that they will spend 2 days off work helping with your bathroom remodel. (or clean out the pantry or clean the garage) This is always appreciated and worth a lot actually because it helps them save a lot of money on projects they need to do.

I have become a fan of the Renegade Craft Fairs (when they aren’t rained out) over the years and I look for the sellers I find at the show on Etsy also.

 I have become a fan of hand made gifts also because it is a more down to earth trend with gift giving. Giving something handmade (a quilt, jewelry, kids toys) shows that you like to find unique gifts, you like to buy eco friendly gifts and you support local artisans and crafters and you local economy. It is all kinds of holiday goodness.

The last renegade craft fair this fall was in the middle of a monsoon so it was less fun, but now they have rented a field house with a roof and heating. So, this should be better. Some of the great handmade gifts I have seen at renegade craft fairs are scarves, hats, sweaters and other knitted items. Kids clothing, kids shows, baby clothes, accessories and children’s toys. Lots of screen printed T-Shirts, messenger bags, purses and jewelry. Women’s accessories of all kinds. Soaps, lots of home made soap and candles. Printed items like letterpress cards, stationery and photo prints. Some sculpture and original artwork. Some glassware, pottery, plates, bowls, vases and glass artwork. Home decorating items and some custom made clothing. Pretty much something for everyone. (although probably more women’s gifts than guys)

Harry Connick Jr is playing 2 nights in December at the historic Chicago Theater with a concert featuring Christmas music from his new holiday album “What A Night! – A Christmas Album“. (CD available in stores now) Harry Connick Jr is one of the people who brought back swing music in the early 1990’s (before the gap commercial) and for that I will always love him. The rest of the world knows Harry Connick Jr for his acting as well as his New Orleans style jazz and big band swing music that has been consistently popular for 2 decades now. He has a smoothness that reminds us of Frank Sinatra and more presence and range than youngster Michael Buble’.

If you like Christmas holiday music or the swing and big band sound, this is a concert not to miss. I can’t go because of prior commitments but I would love to. Harry Connick Jr’s music is always something that gets me in a positive and creative mood. I think the Chicago Theater is also a great place for a concert of this style of music. It is historical and back from the dead kind of like swing music. (although some people would like swing music to die out again). Harry also likes to innovate on classic songs and compose his own work. He is so much more than just someone doing covers from the great American songbook. I highly recommend his shows also because he is one of those few people who is just as good live in performance as you hear on the CDs. In an age of digital enhancement and robot voices, this is rare.

Tickets are still available for the shows on December 10 & 11 (Wednesday and Thursday) at the ChicagoTheater.org site. Both shows start at 8pm and tickets range from $37-$52.00 (plus at least $10 in service charges). There are still tickets available on the main floor and all over the balcony. I advise you to bring binoculars if you sit in the back of the main floor or in the balcony. The view is good in that it is clear and well lit but you just can’t see any detail from that far away or really get a feel for the performance going on. I think this will be a great concert not to miss. (and what is going on with that CD cover? and the spray tan? weird.)

You may love winter for the holidays, but most of us hate winter because of the snow and it’s complications with Chicago’s winter parking bans in the city between November 25 and April 1. (yes winter lasts till April!) If you are lucky enough to have a car while living in the city of Chicago (and can afford to insure and park it somewhere) you most likely play this roulette game with parking on city streets. After you get your city sticker and whatever local street permits you need there is always the challenge of dealing with winter parking bans for street cleaning, snow removal and just overnight parking in general.

What are these Chicago Winter Parking Bans about anyway? And when do they apply?

1. From November 25 through April 1st you can not park on any arterial streets (any main streets, not the residential areas, but still look for signs) overnight between 3am and 7am any day of the week. Ignoring this ban will cost you a $50 ticket and a $150 towing fee to get your car back plus anything else the impound wants from you. ($10 per day your car sits taking up space in their lot) So, seriously it’s like $250 to get your car back. (that is why the parking department is called the Department of REVENUE)

2. Also, there are another set of snow route signs to watch out for that say that parking is illegal there only if there are 2 inches of snow or more on the ground. These are the trickier ones since if it has snowed everywhere, where else can you park? And if you had somewhere else to park you would have been there to begin with. These signs are more functional though because they have to do with snow plows actually clearing the streets and this is important.

3. Apparently there are some unfortunate areas that have both signs and both parking restrictions. Just don’t live in this neighborhood if you see these when you are apartment shopping.

What is the most frustrating thing about this situation? That the city of Chicago doesn’t even know what laws and regulations they have for parking on all the streets in Chicago. There is no map or guide as to where you can not park or what rules there are on streets listed anywhere on the internet a map here you can look up your area to see what parking restrictions you may have this winter. They don’t provide you with any guide to avoid paying these fines because they really want the revenue. How frustrating that our own city sets traps on purpose.

I have a feeling that these winter parking bans are lost on the rich people who can afford their own posh garage and on suburbanites that don’t venture into the city at all. A lot of people have learned their lesson after hundreds of dollars of parking tickets and they just sell the car and rely on public transportation. My guess is that 1/4 of the people in the office I work in don’t own a car while living in the city. It is true that most of them are under 30 also. I think walking to a bus in 20 below zero gets exponentially harder as you get older. So, stay warm this winter and keep your car off the streets and be very careful of any parking signs visible where you park in Chicago. Good luck!

There are so many great photos of the Barack Obama election night celebration on Flickr it is near impossible to process and see them all. I have linked to some here that show how amazingly the event went and how excited all the people were all over the country. I have never seen people out in the streets celebrating all over the world like this before. I have seen pictures of people outside on the streets cheering and celebrating Barack Obama’s election win in Las Vegas, LA, New York, Chicago and San Francisco. It is amazing to see people so excited and electrified by this election and so many people voting for a candidate that they believe in.

I have also never seen people watch the news and process this information in so many ways. People were online, watching TV, watching the internet on their mobile phones and mashing their own creations together with photos, screen shots, videos and their own t-shirt designs to cover the event themselves. It really is a user generated world in combination with the established media now. I sincerely hope that the change and hope we feel can be maintained and that we all do our part to pitch in and help this country rebuild and fix it’s problems. All the polling places are closed across the entire US now and the ABC news organization is projecting that Barack Obama has won the election with 333 electorate votes and John McCain only has 155. This is only the preliminary projected result but people are thrilled. John McCain has just made a very eloquent and sportsmanlike concession speech praising Barack Obama and the historic nature of an African American being president. He also pledged his full cooperation in working with Senator Obama on fixing the problems that this country faces right now. I was very impressed by this speech. I did not expect John McCain to be that emotionally accepting of the projected loss that quickly or that complimentary of Barack Obama. It gives me great hope for the future that John McCain is willing to let this pass and still be an active member of the senate working together with both parties and the president to find real solutions to the issues we face as a country. I am also thrilled that race and ethnicity did not stop Barack Obama from becoming thefirst African Amercan President as the 44th president of our country.

I also want to mention to everyone that while this election outcome is worth jumping on your sofa and shooting off fireworks in the alley (as I just saw here in Oak Park) it is also a time to be patient with our new president. First off, he won’t take office until January 20th 2009. Second, Barack Obama doesn’t have a magic wand that fixes everything automatically any more than any other candidate does. He will face many long discussions with many people in government and the civilian public before any of the answers to the issues emerge and it may take even longer to make those changes that are needed.

We all need to be patient, understanding and supportive so we can help rather than make things more difficult. I still think in addition to Barack Obama’s leadership, this country needs each one of us to pitch in and make the right decisions in our own personal lives, our jobs and our local government to help. This may mean keeping people employed longer even if businesses aren’t as profitable as a result, keeping costs low for customers even if profits aren’t as high as before and not leveraging ourselves or our businesses to the hilt. We all need to save more money, be less statusy and consumption oriented and help each other out more often. We all need to be more like family in lending a hand and offering help and less like sales people over charging for everything and trying to swindle each other. We also need to seriously make changes with how we treat the environment.

So, that is my short list of how you, the general citizen, can help Barack Obama be a great president of the United States of America and be supportive of the changes we need. Other than that we should do some serious celebrating tonight. Whoop it up since Chicago is at the center of this celebration and the movement that made it happen. All we need now is to maintain this positivity and momentum and start working on making changes that we all can benefit from. And now I am going to go drink my champagne and enjoy the TV coverage since I cast my vote earlier this evening and can relax now.

I got the same pamphlet in the mail about a month ago asking about a Constitutional Convention in Illinois that everyone got. I put it aside thinking, I should read that, and never got back to it. Now it is November 3rd, the day before the 2008 presidential election and there is all this Buzz about voting in Illinois on the idea of holding a Constitutional Convention. I thought that was something we did back in the 1800’s or something? I had no idea that there were provisions in the Illinois Constitution that allowed people to call a convention to make changes to it.  Or as Wikipedia states is possible, to call in the old constitution and write a whole new one.

What I was not sure about was what is on the table for change?  What were some people so upset about in the Illinois Constitution that they have done all this work to get it on the ballot and are now rallying people to vote for it? Well I listened to NPR this morning and they had no details whatsoever on what was up for change. The coverage by other media outlets seems just as vauge and confusing. I am not sure what the real reasons are for this proposed convention and rewriting of the Illinois Constitution but here is a rumor I heard about yesterday.

Apparently, while I have been busy working (like every other average American) and building this non-political blog, Governor Blagojevich has been indicted like 20 times for a range of things from illiegal hiring practices to who knows what. Someone said that his biggest achievement as Governor has been not being arrested yet. (and seeing that our last Governor, Ryan is in jail right now I suppose that is an improvement) What I didn’t know was that some people who are opposing him (and potentially just as corrupt) are trying to impeach him and making his life hell by following him around and trying to write him up for every move he makes. So, I heard that this constitutional convention initiative is related. I heard that the big initiative driving this convention thing is that these opposing people want to add provisions for removing a Governor from Office while they are still in Office.

Basically it wouldn’t have killed Blagojevich to have made some friends and not been so sleazy in his Governorship and choice of friends and colleagues. He is making Illinois Politics look as bad as it really is. So, how does this relate to Barack Obama? I wouldn’t have guessed this, but another rumor states that to avoid being Impeached or removed from office after this Constitutional Convention he is going to pull a fast one. Apparently if Barack Obama wins the presidential election, the Governor of Illinois gets to appoint the Senator from Illinois to complete Obama’s term. The rumor states that Governor Blagojevich is going to appoint himself as the Illinois Senator to complete Obama’s term to escape this onslaught of protesters chasing him and give himself a big promotion at the same time. Then this convention thing won’t really matter to him and he will be gone to be corrupt with others of his kind in Washington. 

So, in light of all that gossip that may or may not be true, would you vote for a constitutional convention in Illinois and Chicago? I am not sure it matters anymore since it seems that the machines are just working the system either way it goes so the regular average people like us have no say in what really goes on anyway.

Macy’s State Street Store in Chicago has continued the traditions of Marshall Fields with the lighting of the great Christmas tree in the Walnut Room (on the 7th floor) each holiday season. This year will be no different. I just heard that Tommy Hilfiger will be the special designated guest of honor for lighting the Macy’s Walnut Room tree this year and hopefully Tommy will design some cool unique ornaments to decorate the tree with. Last year in 2007 Martha Stewart lit the Walnut Room Christmas tree in person and her ornaments were featured on what I called the gradient tree. In 2006 the tree was covered in Wedgewood China ornaments and the year before in 2005 it was all about Swarofski Crystal Christmas ornaments. The Christmas Tree Lighting in Macy’s Walnut Room usually happens the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This year the event is scheduled for November 8, 2008 at 1 pm. The tree this year is supposed to be a vintage decorated one with tinsel and antique ornaments.

The Walnut Room at Macy’s is a great day out with the family regardless of who designs or decorates the Christmas tree. I have been going there with my parents for the last few years and it is a very enjoyable experience and a tradition we plan on keeping up as long as we can. The food at the Walnut Room is not super fancy but it is very good and they revamped the menu with some more modern dishes last year in addition to the comfort food favorites you have always enjoyed. (chicken pot pie anyone?)  Expect to pay between $10 and $15 per person for dinner plus drinks, tax, tip and desert. Last year we had the best little mini-bunt spice cakes with ice cream on top that were a Martha Stewart recipe. I have included that picture here at left. We also usually stop to shop a bit and get some Frango mint chocolates since they are very good also. If you go during peak times (afternoons) the line to get into the Walnut Room is long and it is a first come first served type seating order. So, either go around lunchtime or go later in the evening to miss the crowds. The Walnut Room is kid friendly and they have lots of room for stroller parking.

If you don’t know him alreay, Tommy Hilfiger got popular in the 90’s for the preppy look that urban youth ended up taking, changing and owning later on. (think boyz 2 men) In the years since then he has tried to open his own line of stores (one was in Oak Brook Mall) that did not last very long. I know Macy’s is really is loyal to this brand and celebrity marketing plan they have going but I am not sure this one will work. Tommy Hilfiger may be a big deal to Macy’s but the rest of us aren’t really into his designs anymore. The line hasn’t evolved and it is too similar to a bunch of other brands we get cheaper at Target and Old Navy. (and probably manufactured in the same factory in China) So, he isn’t my favorite guy but he is a celebrity so I am sure that there will be a crowd.

If you do plan on visiting Macy’s department store in Chicago on State Street this winter for the holiday displays or the Walnut Room Christmas Tree Macy’s is reachable by Metra trains to Union Station and then by taking a cab from there to the store on State Street. Or if you live near the el train, take the brown, green, pink, orange or red lines to the State Street and Lake Street stop in the loop and just walk one block south of there to get to Macy’s department store.  Enjoy the shopping at Macy’s, the Walnut Room Tree and the great food this holiday season.

I have been a technophile for many years. In fact I often say I am addicted to the internet in a good way. In Chicago this is not unusual though. This city of former livestock, fire and manufacturing glory is metamorphisizing into a midwestern technological oasis. More young people are living and working the digital dream in Chicago than ever before. I might just be one of them.

I have always been fascinated by discovering what information is out there online, how I can learn more about the interests I am passionate about and what all this information means. This means I spend an enormous of time online. Sometimes between my day job and my blogging habit I am online 12+ hours a day. The national average is about 3 hours.

This means that all my computers and my internet connection are very important to me. Luckily both are pretty stable and some cloud computing helps bridge the gap between places I am located. Yes, I have several computers and between work, home and my Fiance’s place there are too many to count. We are looking at setting up a network in our home at some point too. My dell laptop has been a faithful companion over the last 2 years and is still going strong.

Keeping up with the events in Chicago was something that I tried to do personally and then started this blog to write about and the tools I use for it are all online. I sometimes hear about something on the radio or TV and blog about it but usually I am doing all my research online. In this day and age most people research everything from home purchases to their next job online with the help of the Google guys. The affordability of personal computers made all this possible and I am always surprised to see them advertised for as low as they are these days. ($500 now vs $2000 when I was in HS)  And with free wordpress software everyone can have a voice on the internet.

I am also inspired by the new developments that come out every year in gadgets and computers too. I am really wanting a new smart phone that can photograph things I see as they happen in Chicago and then post it directly to the blog online, but I am not quite ready for the financial committment when I am in the middle of planing a wedding. Maybe someone will be kind enough to get us a smartphone for our wedding gift?

Robin Williams is one of the funniest comedians and actors of the last 25 years. His creative work has an incredible range but I was first captivated by his stand-up comedy years ago and I still am today. I was surprised and excited to hear that Robin Williams would be doing a stand-up show tour called Weapons of Self Destruction across the United States and stopping in Chicago. I didn’t think stand-up comedy was something movie actors went back to very often, but I am glad to be wrong about that. Robin Williams has a gift for free form fast moving tangential thinking that is perfect for stand-up comedy. It is a great opportunity to see him perform at the Chicago Theater on September 27th.

We all love Robin Williams’ high energy fast paced stand-up comedy style. I am sure that this show at the Chicago Theater will not disappoint. The tickets went on sale in August and are sold out now for the Chicago shows. Tickets ranged from $46.00 and $100.00 at the Chicago Theater.There was a special package too where for $400.00 you could meet and chat with Robin Williams himself earlier on the day of the show. That seems like an awesome opportunity but yet somehow too expensive and yet not really that interesting. No one wants to bother a celebrity no matter how much you idolize their work and meeting them for a few minutes is nice but it’s not like they will “be your bff” so it seems kinda weird? Unless you are the autograph type. I suppose it could work if you were into that.

This standup tour is called Weapons of Self Destruction (a pun on what you think it is) and they say that the material he is working with this time is more personal in nature. We all know that Robin Williams (like many actors and performers) is not happy with the current government and administration and political jokes will most likely be part of the show. Many people also may have heard that Robin Williams recently went through a divorce and has been through rehab as well. Not easy things to process. I am sure that comedy and seeing the irony of life can help make sense of a lot of things. I am sure that all these topics are pretty relevant and relatable for most of us mainstream Americans. Plus Robin is fantastic at impressions, voices and all the gifts of comedy. I am sure this will be an awesome show.

 We saw the show tonight and it was amazing. Robin covers an amazing array of topics from politics to marriage to drinking to technology to just about everything. He does a fair amount of blue comedy but it isn’t so raunchy that you are grossed out. There is also a very funny bit about the devil really just being one of these corporate sales people on the phone wheeling and dealing with everyone they meet. Overall Robin Williams still has the fastest working mind on stage and the funniest stand-up comedy. I do have to admit that I did laugh more at this show than I did at the Eddie Izzard show we saw this spring. I love Eddie’s comedy and there are some parallels there but Robin was able to move faster and surprise me more which created more laughs. So, if Robin Williams is coming to your town go see this show because it is a great one.

Boutique Hotels are gaining popularity in Chicago and across the country. You would think that all the Hotels in Downtown Chicago are huge skyscraper complexes that have thousands of rooms and no individuality. The truth is that in addition to the large chain hotels many small luxury boutique hotels have popped up in Chicago and provide a unique experience for less money than the large chains.

One of the best Boutique Hotels in Chicago is Hotel Monaco. They are owned by the Kimpton Hotels group and I have stayed at their hotels in other cities. Most recently in San Francisco. The staff of the Hotel Monaco in Chicago is very friendly and goes out of their way to serve the needs of guests traveling. I walk past the hotel every day on my way to work and see the doormen greeting new visitors and giving directions and tips to tourists about the city of Chicago.

Chicago Boutique Hotels are also known for their luxury. In SanFrancisco the Kimpton Hotel I was at left no need unmet. I had a large jacuzzi tub (almost too large to be useful) a full shower, wireless free high speed internet, a full entertainment center and a desk work area in addition to a very comfortable well appointed bed. The staff there was also very helpful in giving me directions around town and the room service was happy to prepare dinner for me really late when I got in from the events I was attending. Truly four star service.

Many Boutique Hotels are built around a theme and the Chicago Hotel Monaco tries to be tropical and creative in a city of cement, wind and snow. The doormen even keep with the Monaco theme and wear purple velour suits in the winter and lavender Hawaiian shirts in the summer with fedora hats. No detail has been left out.

I am also always excited to see that Chicago Boutique Hotels offer more originality in their designs and decor. There are only so many beige walls you can look at in your life. Many of the Chicago Boutique Hotels have colorful themes like the Hotel Monaco in Chicago which features a stylish and vivid pallet of greens, plum and burgundy throughout the hotel. The Hotel Monaco Chicago is also one where you get a great view of the Chicago River and are within a short walk to many top Chicago steakhouses, the House of Blues, The Art Institute, Michigan Avenue and the great Broadway shows in Chicago too. Sometimes the locations of the small boutique hotels is far better than the big chains also.

So, the next time you are visiting Chicago, check out the Hotel Monaco from Kimpton Hotels or another Chicago Boutique Hotel and see if that is someplace that might make your stay even better. I have been to the Chicago Inaternational Film Festival every year for the past 3 years and it has been an event not to miss in Chicago. The Chicago International Film Festival runs for two weeks from October 16th to 29th showing scheduled independent movies from all over the world at three theater locations in the city. The locations of the theaters selected for showing the scheduled ”movie buffet” at the festival this year are the AMC River East 21 theater (322 East Illinois Street Chicago, IL) and the AMC 600 North Michigan 9 (600 North Michigan Avenue) as well as the Harris Theater (205 East Randolph Drive) for the opening and closing night ”Gala” events. I always like that it is like an advance screening to several films that you get to see months before they come out to the general public.

Right now theChicago International Film Festival early bird advance passes are available at a 40% discount through the chicagofilmfestival.org website (which has mostly 2007 information on it) before September 30. They have the 10 movie ticket pass for $110, the 20 movie ticket pass for $210 and the 40 movies ticket pass for $385. (non member prices, membership is $60 for the year but knocks off $30, $55 or $100 off the price passes) I do not have a membership but I attend the Chicago International Film Festival yearly anyway.

This year looks like it won’t disappoint in the range of independent films and themes that will be presented at the Chicago International Film Festival. There are simultaneous showings on most nights so download the entire schedule here (when it becomes available) and mark off which films you want to see ahead of time. With a 10 movie pass ticket it makes it easy to plan your 2 weeks of movies and just show up wherever they are playing ready to go.

I usually always go to the Chicago International Film Festival’s opening night gala and closing night gala. These events will be held at the uber modern Harris theater in Millennium Park in Downtown Chicago. They aren’t saying which films will be scheduled or featured on which nights but these are the 3 gala feature films:

A Christmas Tale / Un conte de Noël  from France and Director Arnaud Desplechin. A Christmas Tale stars Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Paul Roussillon, and Mathieu Amalric who play members of a family who conceive a third child in the hopes of using its bone marrow to save the dying firstborn child. 

Happy-Go-Lucky  from the UK and  Director Mike Leigh. The perennial optimist Poppy is played by Sally Hawkins and charges through life with breathless enthusiasm and a sincere desire to help others, struggling as she encounters fellow Londoners who do not always share her sunny outlook.

Pride and Glory  from the USA and Director Gavin O’Connor. Edward Norton, Colin Farrell, and Jon Voight star in a gritty and emotional portrait of a multigenerational New York City police family forced to choose between loyalties to each other and loyalties to the department.

I saw the ad in the Daily Herald for “Turn of the Century” with Jeff Daniels at the Chicago Goodman Theatre a few days ago and the first thing out of my mouth was ” Jeff Daniels? the guy from Dumb and Dumber?” I have to see this… So I got tickets online from the goodmantheatre.org website with their swish little seat chooser web interface and guess what? It was almost sold out. In order to see the play soon and without having to sit in the rafters it will be a Wednesday night show on September 24th. The Turn of the Century show opens at The Goodman Theatre a week before that on Friday September 19th.

It seems that The Goodman Theatre has been a little jealous of the Steppenwolf Theater’s success this year with August: Osage County winning Pulitzers, Tony awards and all the press in Chicago. I did see one play at The Goodman Theater a few years ago and while it was good, although most of the shows I see promoted at the Goodman look like older themes I would not be interested in. Steppenwolf Theater across town seems to have younger edgier fare and is more identifiable for someone like me in my 30’s. But that said I do like a good Musical and loved Jersey Boys and Wicked.

My guess is that The Turn of The Century is a bigger musical with large dance numbers and tries to use the classic music that made many musicals a hit in the past 100 years. Plus it was a nostalgia boost for the core audience at the Goodman that likes that era. I think bringing people like Tommy Tune and others from Broadway in New York means they were really serious about the project and wanted some big guns to make an impact and getting Jeff Daniels seems to be a draw also because people outside the traditional theater crowds know who he is. Plus people never seem to tire of hearing the songs in the Great American Songbook from composers like Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein.

The thing that I noticed from the backstage footage that the Goodman has online is that it is pre-WW1 music. Like ragtime, player pianos, and even before the 1920’s dance styles. (think long dresses and lots of parasols) It makes me think of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers ballroom dancing (although that was 1920’s – 1940’s) yet can anyone live up to a dance legend and musical immortal like that? How will they make this story in a time that offers no similarity to today, relate able and edgy enough to capture the minds and hearts of Chicagoans? Lots of singing synchronized dancers in period costumes probably won’t do it alone. It will need to tie emotionally to something we care about and something we understand. Most Chicagoans don’t know hoey about dancing nor do they care much about history 100 years ago.

Many of us also did not know that Jeff Daniels had a range beyond quirky-goofy-funny-guy but maybe we are all wrong about that.  From the behind the scenes footage he looks like he does know what he is doing and enjoys being in a musical even if it is in Chicago rather than New York.

The other interesting part of this musical is that they say it is an original musical never performed anywhere before and not written based on someones life or book. That could mean that it is really different from what we expect or not quite as good. It remains to be seen. They elude to some dramatic time travel in the Goodman’s ads and interviews and maybe that is the hook it needs. I will update this post in a few weeks when I see The Turn of the Century at The Goodman Theatre and let you know what I think.

Update and Review 9.25.08:

I saw “Turn of the Century” last night at the Goodman Theatre and it was a very nice theatrical work. The sets, costumes, dancing and singing are all top notch and worth going to see alone. Jeff Daniels fills his role with some of the quirkiness we would expect from him but it is much more of a straight role that most people have seen him in before. (A long way from Dumb and Dumber) He captures the essence of this character in his singing, dancing and acting. (yes, he can sing!) Rachel York is truly stunning in this show, looking amazing in the most impossibly tight corseted dresses, singing a wide range of songs and styles and really conveying the feelings of her character in a very believable way. There is a large supporting cast which means this really is an expensive production. They create mood and setting with some very good dancing and chorus singing that is historically correct and executed well. They also have about a million quick costume changes.

The set uses a white backdrop and white floor and lighting with a grand piano and minimal furniture to create settings for scenes. The stage has a catwalk that wraps around the orchestra pit and allows the actors to interact with the audience more and lets the scenes have an inside and outside divided space. There is also a large conveyor belt on one side that some scenes roll in on, but I’m not sure that is necessary considering how tricky it must be to install. The outside of the stage is wrapped in a circular scrolling electronic sign from floor to ceiling that sends messages around it from left to right. It is used before the show to scroll historical events from different times and during the show to list where and when they happen because the plot jumps around somewhat and there isn’t always more of a cue than a scene change. And of course they surpriseus all with a real live orchestra under the stage complete with a conductor that pops his head up occasionally. Even more people in this complicated production in a small theater.

Overall, I enjoyed the play although I can’t help thinking there are still some areas that need a little refinement and there are some plausibilityholes. The main one is this time travel thing. It is never explained or justified in a believable way although the characters fully accept it. (almost too quickly) The scenes change without any special effects or even an attempt to show that time is changing. They time this jump back in time with the millennium changeover in the beginning which could be understood as some time continuum weirdness but at the end they are back to present day with no reasoning whatsoever. (I think there is one sentence meant to explain why but it just doesn’t do it and can be easily missed) It seemed like they just went on this fantastic voyage to prove that the mid-level artists now would be capable of wowing millions back 100 years ago and that those songs and stories were the best ever told on Broadway so lets go have a nostalgic moment. 

The singing and dancing was flawless but sometimes it seemed like the songs were used just to reminisce about the good old days and had no ties to the emotions of the characters. Some did tell the story and emotions but maybe only 1/2 of them. And for a musical I always thought that was the point. The plot relies on the old standby of making a musical about making a musical. I feel like the people developing this just wanted to go back in time personally to re-live these songs, stories and possibly their youth. This may have also been evident that at 32 I may have been one of the youngest people in the sea of grey haired audience members. So, at least it appeals to the Goodman’s target demographic and will continue to sell out. (but don’t expect to attract many newcomers to the theater like Wicked or Jersey Boys does)

There are some technical difficulties they should work out also to refine things to the best level possible. (considering this is the Goodman) The first scene’s singing is drowned out by the clapping because of the mics the actors are wearing. There is a scene near the end where a clock bell tolls and you can’t hear what is being said there also. The piano is a little weird in that it just has a light-up keyboard since no one in the show actually plays piano. (I am sure finding a Harry Connick Jr Piano playing, singing, acting pro can’t be easy so you can understand why they do this) Sometimes though, I feel like it is better to have the piano turned away from the audience as to improve the believability that he is actually playing it.

All those things aside Turn of the Century is an enjoyable hour and a half show if you like music from the first 40 years of the last century. If you are under 30 you may be like my boyfriend and have never heard the songs used in this show and don’t know that they are out of place being performed in a 1900 style. For those people it won’t really be that compelling, but for the over 50 set it is probably a really nice night at the Goodman theater downtown. My parents would love it.

I went to the WIRED Nextfest the last time it was in Chicago on Navy Pier and I was very impressed. The exhibits and technology on display were engaging and the people representing the work were great to talk to and ask questions. This year’s Wired Next Fest is happening in Chicago again but scheduled to be at at Millennium Park this time and for a few more days, from Saturday September 27th to Sunday October 21th. There are two whole weeks and weekends of technology and exploration happening at the 2008 WIRED NextFest on the calendar.

A bonus is that the admission is FREE for the event, so bring your friends and family because it really is a lot of fun and you do learn some cool new things when you go to the WIRED Nextfest. The schedule of events includes:

I watch the 2008 Chicago Red Bull Flutag event commercials and I can’t help see the resemblance between that 1980’s movie called “Magnificent men in their Flying Machines“. The theme song sings that title then says “they go updidy up up then they go downdidy down down”. The Chicago Red bull Flutag event couldn’t be more like the 1910’s in aviation if they tried. The Redbull Chicago Flutag event has been happening for at least the last 5 years because I see ads for it and unbelievable youtube videos. The ridiculousness of the flying machines is unbelievably laughable. None of the entrants are usually engineers, so it proves for lots of hilarity.

I am not going to be joining in on the Flutag event this year but I may go watch it safely from shore. From the pictures I have seen the viewing is good from just about anywhere on North Street Beach in downtown Chicago.  The event starts at 11 am (you may need red bull if you were out late the night before) and it is free and open to the public. the first flight (crash) is scheduled for 1pm and the awards are given out at 3:30pm.  

If you drive in you will want to take the highway and exit at North Avenue and take that east as far as you can until you hit lake Michigan. Then don’t drive into it. You will have a hard time finding parking near the lake, so try a parking garage if you can find one within a few blocks of the beach. Then enjoy the festivities and be sure to bring your camera to capture the hilarity. The red bull drinks will be flowing the entire time. You can not bring your dog to the event though. Sorry, no digs allowed. If you can bike to the event from Lincoln Park or Lakeview you will have a much easier time finding parking and getting home quickly.

Chicago got it’s very own version of the Huffington Post blog-news-internet-phenom site today August 13th, 2008. I am not a journalism major or a professional writer, but I still wanted to review what this new entry into the news fray in Chicago had going for and against it in the beginning. I have no doubt that the Huffington Post Chicago site will be successful and draw some online readers away from the Chicago Tribune, Sun Times and maybe even the Chicago Reader. But there is only so much time in the day, so how do people choose to stick to the Huffington Post sites when they don’t stick to newspaper sites? How are they profitable when so many newspapers are not? All good questions, and here is what I have been finding out. 

First off, the Huffington Post sites have never been in print so the layout of the site doesn’t have to try and mimic or emulate the print news experience at all. They are not constrained to traditional sections, structure or layout options so they have invented the site in a way that makes sense for their content. First off the home page uses a lot of pictures to promote current linked articles. This lends itself to how people surf the web, scanning and skimming information to see where to click next. The images draw people in and are very important to the story. Even more so when they are more prominent than the headline. The pictures have to tell a story or elude to one. This is a more modern format than a lot of sites use today.

The second major advantage for Huff-Po is that the writers are not paid. This isn’t something I agree with (I am at least paid something minimal for the time I spend on this site) but I see how they use it to compete and win on the profitability front. The PR you get from contributing an article can be a benefit of blogging there but it is no way to make a living. In fact most of the stories listed on the front page are not written or hosted by the Huff Po site at all. They link to sites all over the web, which does not seem to be the way I experienced the original Huffington site. Therefore, I assume the setup, management, editing and tech costs are much lower for the Huffington post site than a major news site. They have less to host and when they do publish content, they are much smaller and only go after hot topics online and not everything that a newspaper reports. And there is no article re-formatting process from print to web or vice versa. Overall, my guess is that the model is to sell ads that pay for the editing, tech development and daily site maintenance and ad sales staff and ad setup. Only in a blog filled world though could a site make money on free content.

The third reason the have a profitability advantage is really just a bunch of foggy reasons. I don’t work with or know anyone who works with Huffington Post, I have only read some articles about them and observed the site myself. I think the usability of the site is designed to convert and SEO is strong to pull in people from search engines. I also think there is a strong link between their content business model for ”news” and one for ”publicity” like in the celebrity world. They know what is trendy and what is hot and that is all they write about or link to. They don’t use AP feeds or generic news content ever, it’s all articles from a very personal analysis perspective. (even though some is linked from other sites, basically working as a news aggregator for now) I would also guess that they use Google analytics well and probably know exactly what is hot and go those directions with new content. Other new media news sites like The Examiner and The Reader bookend the Huffington Post site by being too bland and too weird/obscure. Huff-Po is just right. It is part activist, part gossip site and part social networking phenom. Basically a yuppie-magnet.

Huffington Post has few negatives working against it at this point. The main disadvantage is that if people haven’t been hip to the emerging media space in California they have no idea what Huffington Post is. (Maybe the celeb articles will help there.) They also have no way of getting the word out to build traffic quickly without advertising, which seems like something they don’t do. (the social linking strategy helps, but that isn’t fast growth) They have tried to reduce the “lack of credibility” factor (when no one has heard of you) by linking to all the official news sources in Chicago at the bottom of the home page, which is a nice gift of SEO but not sure if it indicates links those are partners or just other sites you can go read. Plus it is hard to know what is important and hot in Chicago when you have one employee here and everyone else is in California. Making an assumption that the same superficial stuff that usually works in CA works here would be fatal.

Update: The Zed 451 locations in Downers Grove and Schaumburg have closed. The only ZED location still open is in the River North neighborhood of Chicago.

The Zed 451 restaurant opened in Chicago a few years ago after Fogo de Chao brought Brazilian beef to the city and a new way of dining. Zed 451 is no copycat though. They have put their own spin on this unlimited buffet of beef in Chicago. First off, if you are a vegetarian, this is not the restaurant for you.

The concept is that for $49.00 (plus tax, tip and drinks) you get an all you can eat (prix fixe) experience featuring a large salad bar and about 15 choices of meat. The style of eating originated in Brazil and is called Churrascaria where all the meats are barbecued on a rotisserie and then usually served off that rotisserie by the Gauchos who walk around from table to table slicing off pieces of meat. This is an enjoyable style of restaurant if you are a big beef or red meat fan although there are some chicken and shrimp options now that they have diversified to meet the local tastes.

Zed 451 specialized in making this an upscale and more modern experience when they revamped the two Sal & Carvao restaurants without the gauchos under the new name in early 2007. (Located in Schaumburg and Downers Grove) In 2008 they went for more cache’ and opened a flagship Zed 415 restaurant in the River North neighborhood on Clark Street in downtown Chicago. Surely, all big Chicago steakhouses have a trendy downtown location. The atmosphere is cool but upscale and the wine bar and rooftop lounge downtown is a hangout most evenings for sales people, lawyers and the downtown social set. (or those who want to be)

Zed 451’s food is still centerstage though and it doesn’t disappoint. Some people have said that the meat is not absolutely perfectly cooked to their liking but I never have had that problem. The bacon wrapped fillet is the most amazing thing ever. The fillet mignon is also amazing on it’s own. The options also include fish (citrus salmon, macadamia nut encrusted fish) shrimp and chicken. The beef is usually cooked somewhere between medium and medium well so if you like rare meat, it will be hard to find here. It is just the level of cooking that most people want for their beef.

Overall, I think Zed 451 is a great place to go for a special dinner in Chicago, Schaumburg or Downers Grove. I like going to the suburban locations more than the downtown Zed 451 because they are less crowded and you can enjoy a meal there without traffic, reservations, parking hassles or hipsters judging you. 

Zed 451 is open 7 days a week for dinner from 4:30 pm to 11 pm and for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am to 3pm. Reservations can be made online through the opentable system or by calling the numbers below.

I think it has been pretty obvious I have been on vacation lately and not posting to the Chicago Weekend Fun Blog for a few weeks. I apologize for that, but sometimes you just have to get away from the computer and see what is happening outdoors. (Even if it is 95 degrees and humid) Some highlights from my Vacation have been a trip to the Indiana Dunes Beach in Michigan City and an evening at the Naperville Ribfest. Otherwise I have just been hanging around my city Chicago, enjoying some time off from work and catching up with friends. The Gay Pride Parade is an annual tradition in Chicago. The parade draws thousands of proud GLBT community members and local visitors who enjoy the parade and festivities while they support the freedom to be out and be proud in Chicago. I have gone to see the Gay Pride Parade in Chicago, although not for a few years now, and it was a lot of fun and laughs and quite the party. (I distinctly remember the altoids) I do think it is an entertaining and open event for both straight and gay people and can be very entertaining for everyone if you keep an open mind. But then again, that is exactly what the gay pride parade is all about, open-mindedness. (think Eddie Izzard)

We need to keep the openness idea rolling in Chicago, we are pretty close to middle America and some people here really don’t embrace the open culture idea, but events and public awareness like this has changed the gay community in Chicago over the years. In fact everywhere I have worked over the last 10 years there have been a number of open and out gay professionals in the department and company. The companies embraced these differences and it was totally accepted to see significant others at company social events and the companies also provided benefits for these significant others. Now high schools have openly gay groups for teens and things are much more acceptable to be talked about in general. I admit I am not an expert on the gay community in Chicago, but even I have noticed that things have come a long way in the last 10 or 20 years!

If you want to see the 39th annual Gay & Lesbian Pride Parade in Chicago this year here is some info you will need. It is of course free to see the parade, but if you are driving in to the city, expect parking to be difficult to find and you will probably have to pay to park and then walk from a few blocks away. The map below shows the parade route and it starts in Boystown at Clark, Belmont and Halsted and ends at Diversey in Lincoln Park. The gay pride parade begins at 12 noon and usually goes until 2pm or longer. With 250 floats and many groups to see it takes a while. According to the official parade site chicagopride.com over 400,000 people attend the parade every year.  After the parade many people have parties locally and visitors from out of town usually like to do some shopping in the area. All in all it is a fun thing to do in Chicago this weekend.

In case you haven’t already heard, this year’s most eagerly anticipated concert is coming to the Chicago Theater this week. The Swell Season with Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova will be in Chicago on their national Tour following their Oscar win for the songs from the Movie Once. (song: Falling Slowly) And I have found from the first time I saw this movie (spring of 07) I have slowly fallen for this talented duo and the group Glen Hansard was originally with, The Frames and coundn’t be more excited to see them at the Chicago Theater Wednesday night. (The show review is listed at the end of this post)

Their individual stories are almost fairy tale like since they both rose from obscurity to fame after years of work and experience locally. Glen Hansard dropped out of school at 13 at the urging of his principal to go start his career since he was talented at music and uninterested in traditional subjects. He has been making music ever since and a part of The Frames for 17 years, which is a band very popular in Ireland. Marketa Irglova is the daughter of a concert promoter and grew up learning all spects of music and the business among other things. She met Glen years ago while he was on tour with the Frames in Eastern Europe. So, when Glen was approached to see if he knew an Eastern European girl that could sing and play piano he knew the perfect person.

The movie Once was originally written with a well known Irish actor in mind and when things fell through with him, (and with financing, making it a small indie film rather than big budget) they asked Glen Hansard to play the lead role since he had written the music and would be the best person to perform them. Plus parts of the movie were based on ideas he submitted from his experiences busking as a teenager in Dublin. Glen suggested Marketa for the role and she got the part and then they spent a week in the studio recording songs for the movie. The movie itself was shot for something like 100K and with 2 cameras in 2 weeks in mostly public places. The rest is history as people seeing the film fell in love with the movie, the songs and the actors. The Oscar win was the icing on the cake making the small indie film into a major success. I heard that it made 9 million dollars before it was picked up for distribution in the US, but who knows how much it has sold since then. And all these concerts are selling out across the US also.  

Glen and Marketa filmed the movie Once and then even though in the film they go their separate ways, in real life they really did start dating. Their chemistry comes across so well in their music. I have been listening to The Swell Season and The Frames concerts from NPR in All Songs Considered online and downloaded the Atlanta concert from this tour on PlayedLastNight.com. They have a relaxed conversational way of hosting a concert and as experienced performers we are curious to hear the songs from the movie and about more of their music.  They are actually surprisingly funny and Glen likes to go into stories and analogies often on stage that are pretty interesting.

Marketa was a great compliment to Glen’s voice, music and writing skills. Their sound is much lighter and softer together than Glen Hansard was with the Frames, but since The Frames are on tour with them the songs are backed up by a much richer sound than in the movie with a violin, drums and possibly additional pianos and guitars.  They do some Frames songs together also and Marketa can really rock too.

The thing about the music in The Swell Season and in the movie Once is that it seems so real. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova’s music is simple enough to make you want to sing along even if you have never sung before and harmonized beautifully in a complex way at the same time. It is completely open, vulnerable and emotional in ways we tend to normally keep to ourselves but somehow are more comfortable exploring with their help. Personally, I identify with them when Glen says things like “when you tend towards the darkness, its important to repeat these things”.  (the lyrics in Thread the Light) I raise my hand here in the office building I work in on Michigan Avenue while I am listening on my ipod during the work day.

I am overall very excited to see this show since it sold out so fast and you had to know a yuppie hipster or Irish culture fan to even know tickets were going on sale. (I got lucky I work with hipsters) Even though I only got nosebleed seats at the top of the Chicago Theater, it will be a treat to see them live and experience the magic in person.  Tickets are all sold out, so if you really must go to this concert at any cost, you might be able to find a few on Craigslist, although I don’t advocate the reselling of tickets at high prices. If you are more modest in means, check out itunes, NPR’s all songs considered or playedlastnight.com to download and purchase the soundtrack from the Oscar winning Movie Once, The Swell Season album and The Frames albums.Or just rent the film Once from Netflix. It’s a great movie for an evening in at home.

Update: June 18th Show Review (written 6/19/08)

I saw this show last night and it was a dynamic and inspiring musical performance. The show started at 8 with a opener also from Ireland and he played guitar and told a few stories about living in Chicago in the late 80’s.

Then at 9 The Swell Season started. Glen Hansard opened the show by coming out with the acoustic guitar and no amp or microphones and playing acoustically to the audience and singing “Say it to me now” with no mic. It worked well and we were able to hear him way up in the balcony seats without a problem. I was a little dissapointed though that the audience was not that supportive and just politely waited to clap at the end rather than cheering throughout when he had moments of crescendo and projected to the back corners of the theater.

He then introduced Marketa and the band and went into playing the first few songs from the movie that people knew but without much introduction or explanation like I had heard in the concerts online. They played “Lies” with an amazing lighting effect where the 6 spot lights behind them on the stage projected their beams up over the musicians and together up into the theater dome on the ceiling. Then the light reflected back down on the audience in a “heavenly” way. It’s hard to describe, but the nature of the song being about telling lies and then the beam of light from above made a compelling atmosphere for the song. They used these lights again later on in the show too.

About the 4th song in, they sang “Falling Slowly” and Glen Hansard briefly told of how that one song changed everything for them. Then in the song he missed a cue somehow, spun around from the mic and then at the next point he started apologizing for that and explaining that he got into his head a bit. Somehow he has a great sense of humor without really being like a standup. Anyway, he explained that he was thinking that they should dedicate the song to a special guest they had that night. Barack Obama was there. He pointed to mid floor on the ground level of seats, but from where I was sitting you couldn’t see him. Glen made a brief comment about the song being dedicated to Barack Obama and that it would be great if he won the election and made this country great again. I think he hit the sentiment of the crowd on the head with so many people frustrated with so many things in the USA these days. It wasn’t a political statement, it was more a reflection of the feelings and mood of the people in the US right now and a hope that they can get a better life back again and weather the storm of sorts.

After that announcement the show and the audience seemed to warm up considerably. I heard from 3 people who went to the Tuesday night show that Glen talked a lot and the intros were longer than the songs. And that a boy named Ethan was called out of the crowd to sing the Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy song. (he has 29,000 views of him singing it on YouTube and has sung it with Glen Hansard before) On Wednesday though the crowd sensed some reserve in Glen and wasn’t as cheery and supportive until he loosened up after the Barack Obama in the audience announcement. Then the heckler stopped and the crowd was behind him all the way.

I also thought it was interesting that Glen and Marketa each both play guitar and piano and for some songs they switch. I did not know that before seeing this performance. Marketa has the confidence and presence on stage of someone older than her years and Glen just exudes emotions and happiness when he plays and sings. Like he says all these years he has just been playing his guitar and hoping people like him.

One review of a show last week cited that Marketa just sits by the piano and looks to Glen for direction but I never saw that. They keep in eye contact when they are playing together but that isn’t looking to him for direction. Marketa was an active participant in running the show with Glen and they share the stage and the spotlight. After each song they seemed to confer about what to play next and she would stand with hand on hip and chat for a minute with him between songs as if the set list was flexible. She also introduced her songs and the interlude played by the violinist. Anyone who thinks Marketa isn’t as involved in the show just plain wrong.

There were also about 5 songs they invited the crowd to sing along with, which I loved, since it is such singable music within the range of what I am guessing is comfortable for most people’s voices. Or maybe I am over thinking this, but I have been singing along to the swell season in my car for months now and I love it for that. I think the crowd was tentative about the audience participation portion of the program at first (and my seat neighbors may have been annoyed at my singing) but then they concluded the show with an Irish Drinking song singalong called The Auld Triangle that went over well. Glen even went as far as picking an older gentleman out of the audience to sing it along with him on stage like an old Irishman would. The guy sang along a few verses and then retreated back to safety at his seat when Glen wasn’t looking. I guess not everyone would think going up on stage would be fun (like I would) but it was a nice touch to be so open with your audience to invite them on stage with you. This song did end up getting everyone in the 3,000 seat packed house singing, I even nudged my boyfriend to sing and he did.

Overall, I thought the show was great because their voices are always so “on” and the instrumental band members are also so good at this. The violin player was very popular getting many applause when he added his instrument to songs. They can play the songs spot on like the CD and play such a depth of music beyond it because of the depth of their experience and skill. Even the songs that aren’t from the movie have the characteristics we love about the Swell Season and Glen and Marketa’s work and the audience received them warmly.

After the show ended we walked around to the side of the Chicago theater to see if the group of fans would get their wish and get to meet Glen and Marketa after the show. But after a crazy/drunk/homeless guy ranting at us for a 1/2 and hour and the information from the security guy that they didn’t come out until 2am the night before (and a lot of beer went in through that door) we decided to just go home. It was late and the L stops running at a certain time so we had to get back, but we were overall very happy with the show and I would definitely see them again in concert if they came to Chicago. Update 6/20/08I just read on Time Out Chicago’s Blog that Barack Obama was not there, they checked with the Chicago Theater directly on that. How weird. Glen, what’s up with saying he was?

I think Chicago is a bad choice for the 2016 Olympic Games. I know that I am in the minority with that opinion, so I wanted to make my opinion points (and those of others like me) visible online. Just to be clear, it isn’t that I am not a fan of the Olympics. I actually am a fan and usually watch some part of the Olympics on TV when it happens. In fact I was such a fan of the Olympics that spent most of my childhood idolizing the Olympic athletes and spent a decade of my family’s own time and money pursuing a figure skating career inspired by the 1984 Olympics.

Now that I am an adult who works hard to pay a mortgage, taxes and transportation costs in Cook County my views of the Olympics have matured.  I now work in Marketing for a living so I realize that the Olympics much like the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL are glorified marketing advertising circuses and money machines maximized for entertainment value, seat ticket sales, advertising revenue and profit. Not much is done for the love of the game and in fact much is done in spite of it with drugs, enhancements and fixing. (the NBA Finals this year were largely believed to be completely rigged, and many olympic medals have been given back in recent years due to illegal doping and cheating) Therefore, I don’t see an overall benefit of the 2016 Olympic Games being held here in Chicago in an inspirational, financial or infrastructural way since none of those things are the actual goal of the games. (the only real goal is to make a lot of money)

The issue I have with the 2016 Olympics in Chicago would be that they are a huge industrial, infrastructural, financial and logistical process that will end up costing the citizens of Cook County and DuPage county millions of dollars in taxes. This raises the same question we ask about the Iraq war. Why should we be spending all that taxpayer money on something petty, frivolous and non-essential when there are so many basic needs not being met for the people in Chicago? Lets list a few basic community needs we have that aren’t being met that might be a better use of the city, county and local corporate investor’s dollars:

1. Basic Transportation- The Chicago CTA budget goes broke every year or two. The EL trains are falling apart and falling off the tracks every few months. The Buses spew black smoke into people’s faces when they pass by on the street clogging daily traffic and they keep cutting back on routes people need to get to work. Cars don’t have it much better. All the major highways have backed up traffic jams into and out of the city at all 24 hours a day now and construction rips things up every summer while cutting traffic down to 1 lane and yet the roads never get less congested or better in quality.  I think these funds would be much better spent overhauling the EL trains, tracks and stations, converting Buses to electric rechargeable power and research and installation of better quality road materials that don’t require replacement yearly. This also factors in to how the 2016 Olympic Games thinks they can route hundreds of athletes and thousands of viewers through a network of highways and train routes that can’t handle the 9 million people who live here now. The bandwidth just isn’t there.

2. Poverty – There are more people homeless, begging and asking for money on my 5 block walk to work downtown than I ever saw in the first 25 years of my life. Homelessness, poverty and drugs are a huge problem in Chicago. Some of this is created by Gangs, but now that the “projects” are taken down, there is no one place you can go to find the problem and try and work on helping. I shouldn’t see so many people desperate for a variety of reasons and it shouldn’t be Chicago’s priority to make a few developers even more rich with Olympic development contracts when so many people just want a stable income to live on so they can have a place to live and food to eat. Most of us believe that this situation is related to the continuing cycle of a lack of education, ease of finding drugs and lack of available jobs. This 2016 Olympic investment money would be much better spent on education programs in the low income neighborhoods, schools and work training programs. A lot of people say that the Olympics will bring jobs and money to Chicago, but a job for a year will leave these people out on the street again soon and doesn’t solve anything. Chicago doesn’t have a very good track record in helping the greater community, over choosing to help the rich get richer. Big corporations in Chicago choose to send money to Malawi and Africa (a certain jobsite and Oprah Winfrey) for the trendy PR value rather than fund needy local schools and children’s charities that make a difference in the community that they actually live in. Cook County has a board and a city hall constantly plagued with political patronage scandals, ghost employees and contracts awarded without competitive cost bidding because of under the table kickback deals. This town is still all about organized crime and patronage decades after Al Capone died. Some things never change. Maybe the Olympic Committee is really the same kind of organization, and they don’t care either? The Olympics being associated with Chicago’s patronage and organized crime problems is not going to be good for their PR.

3. Education - It is great for a kid to aspire to be a famous athlete, but isn’t it more practical and realistic that they aspire to finish school, make a good living and contribute to a better neighborhood? These are basic ideals in the suburbs but not seen as much in the city. I know the Olympic committee will lump Chicago and the surrounding suburbs into one category when they are here (and so do we sometimes) but we are really a completely divided culture. (a large number of suburbanites won’t ever go into the city because of the crime, cost and constant gridlock) The suburbs really want nothing to do with the Olympics because it doesn’t contribute to those goals that they have mastered. It doesn’t help their schools get better, their kids get smarter nor them to make any more money. It actually costs everyone more money for an experience no one wants with a lot of traffic and security nightmares.  In addition to all that, this money would be much better spent improving the Chicago Public Schools and making sure that these kids get better instruction, more resources and achieve more goals just like the suburban kids do. Even the suburbanites would agree with that.

Basically, I think it is important for the Olympic committee to get off the approved cleaned up shiny show path when they visit and see the real problems that Chicago has in addition to all that is being offered and see that they will negativley impact the 2016 Olympics if held here. We are a city with an identity crisis. We have lost most of the titles we had for years with business, manufacturing and standard of living (even tallest building) and we haven’t really figured out a clear path to success again. (seriously, right now we are mostly known for bringing childhood and adult obesity to the world through the success of McDonald’s which was started here and is still based in OakBrook) No offense to the Olympics, but a bunch of stadiums we don’t need and a 2 week sports party aren’t going to help us figure out how to reinvent the business and industry here any faster.

We should instead invest our time and money in our community, our citizens and our infrastructure for the right reasons, not because we can sell a lot of advertising and make some big money fast. A lot of people will be far more hurt in the long run by a lack of basic resources and higher taxes and living costs than will be helped by a transient sporting event bonanza. I would really like more people to voice their opinion about this in the comments, especially those who have been silent before now. It’s the silent people who don’t get represented and then have to pay the high price for decisions that affect our lives like hosting the 2016 Olympics in Chicago.

The Old Town Art Fair is just one of many festivals going on this weekend in Chicago. On June 14th and 15th (Saturday and Sunday) from 10 am to 6 pm you can pay $5 bucks to wander through the stations and view all the artwork and hear the local jazz and musicians play. The entrance is on to the Old Town Art Fair is at 1763 N Park Avenue but most people seem to get there by Second City at North Avenue and Wells Street because the Piper’s Alley theater has a paid parking garage. (it fills up fast and costs $25 to park for the afternoon) From there you can walk north or south to view the posh artwork.  

The Old Town Art Fair features local artist’s work from Chicago and the surrounding areas. You can find everything from fine art like paintings and watercolors to photography, sculpture and other creative arts. It is not though a craft fair. You won’t find flower arrangements or sewing projects. It is all about art in the traditional sense. They even feature some interesting emerging artists you might also see at the Around the Coyote Festival in Bucktown each year. So if you are looking for art to furnish your condo or home in Chicago or if you are just looking for an entertaining way to spend the afternoon in the Old Town neighborhood, check out the Old Town Art Fair. Expect large crowds (like in the picture) and this weekend expect it to be hot and sunny so remember the water and the sunscreen while enjoying the art fair.

Chicago’s IO Theater has been a local school and proving ground for improv and comedy royalty for decades. These are the shows currently running at IO Theater in Chicago and my thoughts on the shows and actors I have seen. Most of the time when I go to IO, the improvisers surprise and enlighten me about something very funny. The theater isn’t new, so overlook some of the aging details and have a beer or two and enjoy the comedic genius. The history of IO and Del Close is a great contribution to the arts in Chicago and they deserve your support because they really do put together great work and very funny comedy shows. Whether improvised or scripted, they are all very high level performances and experimental at the same time. 

Shows usually cost between $5.00 and $18.00 per ticket depending on the popularity of the show and if they usually sell out tickets. Shows are an hour to an hour and a half depending on the show. IO also has some basic food you can buy there for snacks but the menu is limited to things like pizza, chips and whatever is microwaveable. The bar list of mixed drinks is much more advanced and they offer many microbrew beers from all over the country and the world. Improvisers love their beer. They also serve $2.00 Schlitz for those uncultured people who just like a cheap buzz. The theater also hosts special guest shows and performances from time to time, check the web site for updates or get on their email list for email schedule show updates too. Parking is tricky in this crowded Wrigleyville neighborhood. Get there a 1/2 hour early to find street parking or expect to pay $10-$25 to park in a lot within a few blocks of the theater.  Being across the street from the cubby bear and Wrigley field has its pluses and minuses and parking is definitely hard to find if there is a cubs game going on.

Big News - The Chicago version of the LA show that usually comes to Chicago for sketchfest every year. This show combines sketches, music, songs and some improvisation to make light of the week’s news. They are big into Political satire, of which you would expect more from Second City, but they do it on the fly with only a few days to write and prepare each show. It is a cross between improv and the daily show with very funny results.

The Chicago Improv Rebellion

The Deltones - Improv in Song. This show was created to replace Baby Wants Candy which left after many years performing there. I think the format is much the same, they improvise and make an entire musical out of a few suggestions. All the performers here are very talented singers and improvisers, it is amazing to see this all come together using the harold format and song.

Whirled News Tonight - Very funny weekly improv show based on news headlines of that week. It usually sells out, so you should buy tickets in advance and get there early for a seat. You never know what will come out of this show.

This is some very disturbing news. The state of Illinois will be deploying radar and speed cameras all across the state in July to record photos and track speeds of cars going over the speed limit in construction zones and work zones on the highways and tollways. The first ticket will be for $300.00 fine and a second one will result in a $1,000.00 fine. On the surface that looks like something good, to ensure safety, but it isn’t and we have seen this before.

What the press release doesn’t say is that speeding isn’t what you think it is. Most of us consider 5 mph over the speed limit to be ok, because a hill could create that without you even knowing it and most cops won’t write you a ticket for going 2 mph over the limit. These cameras and radar machines will be able to automatically print cash for the state’s budget deficit by sending tickets for anyone over the limit at any level. Even 1 mph. And they will, because it has nothing to do with safety. It is all about money.

This was a huge problem in Bolingbrook last year when a Mayor’s thinly veiled attempt to “reduce accidents” revealed a plan to print cash also. It failed when residents were getting $200.00 tickets in the mail several days a week for making legal right turns on a red light after stopping behind the white line. People were enraged. They lit up the internet protesting this unfair way to basically steal their hard earned money during an economic downturn when paying the mortgage and bills is harder than ever already. After months of vocal complaints, phone calls and an outright boycott of the stores in Bolingbrook, the mayor reconsidered this policy, took his money to the bank and suspended the program in November 2007. This has also been a huge problem as cameras were installed in London and all over England as a revenue generating machine, and the people were so enraged they openly disable and destroy them and just voted out the current mayor of London that approved it.

I hope the same protests happen online, by phone and in person all over the state of Illinois about these unfair tickets from these  automated speed and radar cameras. Technology has led to many new conveniences and advances in our lives, but it has also reduced our privacy and anonymity to an almost non-existent level. And now exploiting technicalities for the sake of revenue is more popular than ever.

It is obvious also that there is a huge budget deficit to be filled in Illinois right now, and technically catching small infractions and charging an insane amount of money in penalty for them is a fast way to make a lot of bucks. What the citizens of Illinois really hate is the patronizing tone of this false justification for the charges being to save lives. We know it isn’t true, and that isn’t even a growing problem. If saftey was a problem, the numbers would be higher. They find it legal and justified to charge everyone $300 or $1,000 because 2 people were killed in 2004 and 5 in 2003. No data is presented to prove that in the past 5 years anyone has been killed, injured or otherwise mildly annoyed while working on the roads. Why use 5 year old data to justify this program except that this is the last time this happened? And they don’t mention if the cars were speeding or not. I would bet they weren’t speeding and it was probably drunk driving, of which kills hundreds of people every year and the state is not very good at stopping at all.  How about we accept that accidents happen sometimes on highways rather than invent false reasons to charge people money they can’t afford because there is no public vote on this type of revenue generation scheme and no way the citizens could block it from happening?  

Another solution to this workers shutting down the roads every summer would be to actually fix them in a proper manner so they don’t require more fixing every summer. I have had a strong feeling for years now that the road construction companies are a huge racket making money in unjust ways from the state while they patch and repair roads in low quality ways that won’t last, on purpose, to create more work for themselves next year and for every year in the future. No roads should have to be redone every year. Yet, there they are on 290, I-55, 294, 90-94, I-88 and 355 every year jackhammering out road seams just to put in 2 seams where there was once 1. All the seams patched now buckle and bump my car so that the CD skips, but hey that made someone personally a lot richer. I believe that 90% of the highway road construction is completely unnecessary. I would be happy with the quality of the roads with no further work at all for about 5 years.

Hey, there is the answer!  The answer to the budget deficit problem is to stop all road work for the next 5 years. That way we don’t get busywork shutting down our roads and the state of Illinois can actually pay for things it needs all the while no one gets killed or mildly annoyed working there.

So, now we know that instead of stopping the racket of road construction companies basically extorting money from the state, the government has decided to steal the money from the citizens to pay them. Make your opinion known to the governor and state government that this is not right to do to citizens and it must stop.

Personally, I am not going to travel on the highways or tollways after July 1. I can’t take the risk of loosing that much money for something I didn’t do right now. I am perfectly ok with back roads for where I need to go. If you do have to travel on these highways, use cruise control and set it for 5 mph below the limit just in case of a hill.
