It’s August and all the stores in Chicago would like a share of your pocketbook this season in back to school supplies, clothes, shoes and college dorm necessities. Some have great sales starting already, other stores will start the back to school sales in Chicago this week. Most kids start school in a few weeks and want new backpacks, lunchboxes, supplies and of course jeans, gym shoes and stylish accessories.  Kids don’t care very much about whether there is a back to school sale running or not, but they do need some new stuff.

Yet, this year we are still in a recession and the economic activity is restrained, so how much new stuff will people really buy? Or can you get more use out of last year’s backpack and lunchbox? Maybe it’s not the time for a cell phone for the kids just yet? This year’s back to school buying season may be more about sales than ever.

If you want to afford the things you need for the lowest prices check out these tips for saving money and stores and where to find Chicago back to school sales and discounts.

1. Skip the non-necessities.I don’t think it’s the year for coach purses, 7 for mankind jeans or new iphones. I think most families are looking for back to school sales in Chicago this year on back to school items and are more likley to re-use things they have around the house. If you can get some life out of cleaning up last year’s backpack, lunchbox, gym shoes or get by with last year’s calculator, people are doing that.

2. Look for the back to school sales. You need to look around at all the sales to get a feel for the best prices. The best way to do this is to research online first, but beware some stores can charge different prices for items online than they do in the store. Look for fliers online to check store prices before you drive all over town. Target, Walmart and most department stores like Carson’s and Macy’slist the flyer online in image format to view. Getting the Sunday paper is also a good deal this year because those back to school sale flyers are delivered to your doorstep. Many office supply stores have school supplies on sale, check Office Max and Office Depot and Staples flyers.

3. Consider unusual stores for even more discounts. Maybe the dollar store has more value than you might think? Sometimes general items like notebooks, folders, markers and glue can be found cheaper at a dollar store and if you don’t like the brand label, cover it with stickers or remove it all together and decorate the bottle with a sharpie.  The worst place to buy school supplies is usually the grocery store, they never have sales, have very little selection and always have high prices. Sometimes you can find daily deals on the wise bead blog for office supplies at stores you would not expect.

4. Buy used expensive itemslike computers and cell phones instead of new if possible. You can buy unlocked cell phones on ebay or sign a contract to get a cell phone for free with a plan. Computers last longer than you might think, and with some refreshing of the software and cleaning of the hard drive many used desktop and laptop computers are perfectly good for a few more years after someone sells them. Look for deals on ebay or with a friend that does IT work.  IT guys always know when companies are getting new computers and selling the old ones cheap. They also know how to refurbish them. Good friends to have.

5. If in doubt, wait on buying new back to school clothes. If you need some quick shiny new clothes to get into the first month of school with check out Old Navy’s sales and H&M for teens. The styles are hip and the prices are low. Plus the long sleeve stuff isn’t really wearable yet because it’s too warm. In September and October all the fall stuff will be on more discount and even cheaper than the 10-25% offnow. Plus most discounts are listed as “specially marked items only” anway. Also, for teens buying gently used clothes at Plato’s Closet is always a good idea. They charge less than half the original price for some very cool brands.

6. Stick to the back to school list. Don’t deviate from the list and let the kids get extra stuff, or buy extra stuff for yourself! It is easy to toss extra cool new stuff in the cart, but if you have a budget to stick to, the list is the best guide.

I was checking out the Taste of Chicago 2009 map of vendors and restaurants and there is more to choose from this year at the taste than ever. The Taste of Chicago 2009 offers everything from classic Chicago hot dogs and pizza to vegetarian dishes, to international specialties from all over the world to luscious sweets and deserts.

The Taste of Chicago is an annual event for many people who live in the city so be aware of the crowds that you will be working with. Don’t bring a lot of stuff to carry and wear comfortable shoes for the long walk from the Bus, El, Cab, Metra or Parking Garage. the taste of Chicago isn’t cheap either. There is no admission fee, but all the food costs you in “tickets”. Expect to spend $20-$40 in tickets per person including appetizers, drinks, main dishes and deserts.

The International Kennel Club of Chicago hosts it’s annual dog show this weekend at McCormick Place in Chicago. The Dog Show runs from February 18th through February 22nd at McCormick Place West 2301 S. Martin Luther King Drive, Chicago, IL 60616.

Tickets are $13 (adults) and $17 for Parking for anyone who would like to be a spectator to this grand event. The International Kennel Club of Chicago’s annual Dog Show is a Westminster Dog Show-like event right here in Chicago with the same level of professionalism in dog breeders.

Many people attend this show even if they aren’t a breeder or dog owner. There is no denying the beauty of the dogs and their breeds. If you are looking for a pet, you may even find the International Kennel Club Dog Show to be informative about the different breeds while showcasing over 10,000 dogs.

This weekend Kennel Club Dog Show is the place to be to see everything from award winning Labradors to stately Irish wolfhounds and American favorites like golden retrievers and greyhounds. All sizes and breeds will be featured from toy breeds (toy poodles, chihuas) to working dogs and terriers (like Barney the former first family’s dog). Come out to the dog show with the family for a day of entertainment, awards and education.

The Shamrock Shuffle is an 8K run or 5K walk race for charity in Chicago on March 29, 2009. The Chicago Shamrock Shuffle is usually a fun run without a lot of pressure that a marathon might have and it inspires us Midwesterners to get out and exercise again after the frigid winter. This year Bank of America is the main sponsor. Registration is open now and the only requirements are that you can run a 15 minute mile or walk the 5K and pay the $40 entry fee.

Update: the registration is closed now due to the 32,500 person limit being filled already!

I know that a lot of people enjoy this race as runners also, since the Chicago Marathon isn’t until October and this is a lot shorter. But mostly the Shamrock Shuffle is a race for people who live in the city and enjoy running for exercise or want a goal to get back in shape and like the idea of doing it while supporting a charity. Many runners like to run in green for St Patrick’s Day also.

Try it out this year you might just get hooked on running! Nike has a great training site for runners also. They have detailed plans to get yourself up to speed of running a race if you need help.  After you register you get assigned to a corral depending on your speed and that determines when and where you start.

Trader Joe’s opened their new Oak Park Store location on December 5, 2008.Trader Joe’s is a great store for Oak Park because it is all about organics, low cost gourmet and foods from around the world. They have a great selection of interesting foods plus a Trader Joes House Brand that offers just about everything for less. The new Oak Park store is located at 483 N Harlem Ave in Oak Park, IL 60301. Parking is available in a garage near by but beware the elevators don’t always work, so if you plan to buy a cart full, park on the ground floor.

Oak Parkers are a unique breed. (I know, I live there) We appreciate the local delicacies but want to experience the best the world has to offer. We like the close availability of the city of Chicago and mass transit but want to live green and earth friendly lifestyles at the same time. We want really tasty enjoyable food but we want it to be good-for-us at the same time. We also like elegant new products but don’t want to spend an arm and a leg in a recession.

Somehow Trader Joe’s Food Stores cover this entire list of contradictions. Not everything in Trader Joe’s fits all the requirements, but everything hits at least 2 or 3 of them. I am not a vegetarian or someone who eats only Organics so I may not know as much about those foods as I should, but I know that a lot of people have applauded Trader Joe’s alternative foods that are vegitarian, vegan and organic friendly.

Others applaud Trader Joe’s for clear labeling and dating of their products that are perishable like deli meats, cheeses and breads. Some people contrast this honesty policy with whole foods no-date-labels on anything in a refrigerated case so you don’t know how long it has been there. (a day or a week?) I think the only complaint I have heard about Trader Joe’s is that sometimes products are discontinued and people can’t get them anymore. It causes a freakout situation because it is usually something that wasn’t available from other stores in the first place, and TJs was the only source locally for that item. (a balsalmic reduction is frequently mentioned) But this may be a result of that product not being available from the manufacturer or it not selling enough in the stores. Neither are much fun, but both are a factor of doing business globally.

I have been shopping at the downtown Trader Joe’s location lately since I work nearby and it is closer to walk over after work than it is to drive to the other locations in Lombard, Glen Ellyn or Downers Grove.  (or on the North Side) To celebrate having a new Trader Joe’s within walking distance from my house I came up with a list of my top 10 foods to buy at Trader Joe’s that I think you should check out:

10. Potato Pancakes – Latkes- I love potato pancakes because I am Ukrainian and they are part of my heritage and since I am no cook, I really enjoy the latkes that Trader Joe’s sells frozen. Just pop them in the oven to warm them up crispy, add a dollop of sour cream and voila, yumminess.

9. Quiche- There are 2 kinds of quiche, with crust and without. They are both wonderful for no mess one plate dinners. It might not be rocket science to whip up a quiche myself but sometimes during the work week I couldn’t be bothered to run the dishwasher let alone cook something. Microwaving the bacon-feta crust-less quiche or the crusted spinach or ham & cheese quiche and you have a hearty dinner with rich flavors.

8. Scones – the fresh baked scones aren’t always available but they are luscious.

7. Tiramisu- the boxed frozen tiramisu is just like at the fancy restaurants but half the price. I like to use Trader Joe’s tiramisu as a birthday cake for small groups (because it isn’t very large) and you can keep it frozen for several months just in case something comes up to celebrate.

6. Two Buck Chuck- this wine is good, but don’t overlook all the other unique wines that Trader Joe’s carries. I have found many good wines here to compliment my meals.

5. European Style Yogurt- I first tried this in France where this was the only style of yogurt they had and they sold it in small glass containers that got re-cycled. I found that this slightly tart but sweet thick yogurt is available at Trader Joe’s in a few flavors. I like the coffee and the chocolate. After tasting the richness of the European style yogurt, Dannon will taste too sugary sticky sweet and simple. 

4. Individual Chocolate Lava cakes – These are beyond decadent, and sometimes can take the edge off a particularly bad/frustrating day. I don’t recommend buying them all the time though because I would eat them all the time then. I have to make sure I consume some healthy food too after all!

3. Kashi Products- Now you can get Kashi everywhere (including Jewel and Target) but Trader Joe’s was the first place I saw the Tasty Little Crackers and the Go Lean cereals. You can still get great Kashi Products at Trader Joe’s and they are usually priced lower than most other grocery stores. Likewise Trader Joe’s was also one of the first places you could find organic/natural cleaning products, soaps and shampoos. They still stock a great selection of those also.

2. Organic Milk- They charge far less for the organic and hormone free milks than most grocery stores (Whole Foods) do. I have friends that only drank hormone free or Organic milk while pregnant and also use that kind of milk for their kids, and it saves them a lot of money to get it at Trader Joe’s. The organic meats (beef, chicken, fish)are also a good deal if you can buy them on sale and freeze them until needed. Most meat is ok frozen for up to a year.

1. Mochi- Trader Joe’s is the only place I have been able to find these yummy ice cream treats for sale in a grocery store in Chicago. They come in Chocolate (the best), Strawberry, Mango and Green Tea. I found the Green Tea flavor to be a bit odd at first but it grows on you. The best thing is that each ice cream ball wrapped in a rice flour dough is only 100 calories.

2008 was a busy and eventful year in Chicago. People started off on edge about the war in Iraq and ended with more hope for the future even amidst more problems with the economy. 

Chicago had it’s fair share of events, news, trends, buzz and history made in 2008. The biggest most popular news and events in Chicago happened in the last few months with Barack Obama winning the presidential election and Rod Blagojevich being arrested and then released with corruption charges. 

Chicago also remained in the bid process for the 2016 Olympics ( despite my disagreeing about it’s appropriateness here) and we got monsoons of rain in June and Snow in December, January, February and March. The precipitation levels in Chicago have been on the rise in 2007 and 2008, nobody seems to know why. Bernie Mac passing away was big news in Chicago because it was so unexpected and he was (and is) so popular here. Politics is always new in Chicago but I haven’t gotten into the fray there. We try to keep things clean on the Chicago Weekend Fun Blog.

Not all of these topics are things we can post about here with our main focus being about entertainment, events and fun things to do in Chicago. It is also a secondary goal that we cover any other issues that people living in Chicago have to deal with and try and always remain open minded about all different people, cultures and ideas.

There were many more posts that were well received but too long a list to include here and I always appreciate the comments, emails and contact form submissions about the blog. You may love winter for the holidays, but most of us hate winter because of the snow and it’s complications with Chicago’s winter parking bans in the city between November 25 and April 1. (yes winter lasts till April!) If you are lucky enough to have a car while living in the city of Chicago (and can afford to insure and park it somewhere) you most likely play this roulette game with parking on city streets. After you get your city sticker and whatever local street permits you need there is always the challenge of dealing with winter parking bans for street cleaning, snow removal and just overnight parking in general.

What are these Chicago Winter Parking Bans about anyway? And when do they apply?

1. From November 25 through April 1st you can not park on any arterial streets (any main streets, not the residential areas, but still look for signs) overnight between 3am and 7am any day of the week. Ignoring this ban will cost you a $50 ticket and a $150 towing fee to get your car back plus anything else the impound wants from you. ($10 per day your car sits taking up space in their lot) So, seriously it’s like $250 to get your car back. (that is why the parking department is called the Department of REVENUE)

2. Also, there are another set of snow route signs to watch out for that say that parking is illegal there only if there are 2 inches of snow or more on the ground. These are the trickier ones since if it has snowed everywhere, where else can you park? And if you had somewhere else to park you would have been there to begin with. These signs are more functional though because they have to do with snow plows actually clearing the streets and this is important.

3. Apparently there are some unfortunate areas that have both signs and both parking restrictions. Just don’t live in this neighborhood if you see these when you are apartment shopping.

What is the most frustrating thing about this situation? That the city of Chicago doesn’t even know what laws and regulations they have for parking on all the streets in Chicago. There is no map or guide as to where you can not park or what rules there are on streets listed anywhere on the internet a map here you can look up your area to see what parking restrictions you may have this winter. They don’t provide you with any guide to avoid paying these fines because they really want the revenue. How frustrating that our own city sets traps on purpose.

I have a feeling that these winter parking bans are lost on the rich people who can afford their own posh garage and on suburbanites that don’t venture into the city at all. A lot of people have learned their lesson after hundreds of dollars of parking tickets and they just sell the car and rely on public transportation. My guess is that 1/4 of the people in the office I work in don’t own a car while living in the city. It is true that most of them are under 30 also. I think walking to a bus in 20 below zero gets exponentially harder as you get older. So, stay warm this winter and keep your car off the streets and be very careful of any parking signs visible where you park in Chicago. Good luck!

The International Exposition of Sculpture Objects and Fine Art (SOFA) is planned for Festival Hall in Navy Pier in Chicago on November 6-9. This is an amazing contemporary art show and well worth the admission to attend. The work on display at SOFA ranges from glass to ceramics to textiles and sculpture. Even if you are not an art expert this show is eye opening and entertaining at the same time.

Art innovates constantly and SOFA Chicago is one of the few places to see what is new and evolving before it hits mainstream. If you are smart you can integrate these style details into your life before everyone else (haha) and become more of a style innovator yourself. That said the purchase prices of these art objects and sculptures are steep. These artwork pieces on display are not quite intended for the general public to buy and are usually purchased for private collections or in museums for the rest of us to enjoy. SOFA Chicago isn’t somewhere to go if you need to furnish your living room unless you are a millionaire. There is also a SOFA VIP Program and a free Lecture series for anyone who would like to attend. There is more info with the dates and times on their website listed below.

Over 35,000 people attended SOFA Chicago in 2007 and there are more than 100 galleries and dealers all in the same location together at Navy Pier. If you buy serious art this is the event to see everything all at once. Tickets to SOFA Chicago are available online for $15 for one day or $25 for a 3 day weekend pass. There is also an opening night Gala event that is $50.00 and you get to see all the art and sculpture objects before anyone else. Personally I was thinking of going since I have never been to SOFA and I hear people raving about it every year. It isn’t that expensive to attend although you will pay another $25.00 on top of your ticket prices for parking at Navy Pier. I think $35.00 is a small price for all that great inspiration.  Check out sofaexpo.com to buy tickets online or you can buy them at the door also.

The Chicago Gourmet Festival (or the seriously fancy food show) brings the finest in foods, chefs, wines and housewares to the public downtown in Millennium Park on September 26th, 27th and 28th. This event is part housewares show, part celebrity gourmet cook instructional lesson and part wine tasting all in one. It makes sense though good food pairs well with fine wine and requires unique prep utensils and recipes to achieve. The Chicago Gourmet Festival would be the perfect place to bring your friend the “foodie” and the “wine snob” to socialize. I also think in a own economy people are saving money in some areas and spending it in comfort food and in enriching their experience at home. The Chicago Gourmet Festival offers new recipes and culinary skills which are a part of feathering the nest and keeping up with the Joneses at the same time.

The big draw to this event seems to be the Celebrity Chefs and Master Wine Sommeliers. Everyone from Chicago hometown fave Rick Bayless to AlpanaSingh will be there up close and personal to chat with and learn from. The Master Sommeliers for the Chicago Gourmet Festvial are Frederick Dame, Alpana Singh, Joseph Spellman and Serafin Alvarado.  There will me many more celebrity chefs in each of the events that are not specifically listed. If you enjoy the food network and channel 11’s create channel you will love this event.

The ticket prices are a bit…well, pricey. It is $150.00 for a one day ticket pass and $250.00 for a weekend ticket pass. (not including parking) ( Use your American Express Card and this code for a 15% off discount CG2008DC) I would guess there is some cooking schwagthat you get along withthat (cook books, wine bottles and housewares) to make it worth that much money? Or maybe it is just about exclusivity and access to the celebrity chefs? You can get into the special event tents for other amounts of money if you know there will be a certain chef there that you want to see. The Grand Cru tastings are $175.00, theCIA Worlds of Flavor Pavilion is $95.00 and the Whole Foods Pavilion and the Seminars are each $30.00. (the most reasonably priced thing on the menu)  Tickets can be purchased through the chicagogourmet.org website online or at the door of the event if they have not sold out.

CIA Worlds of Flavor Pavilion on the Harris Theater Rooftop Terrace 12 pm to 2 pm.This event features a latin flavor and decor as well as cooking demonstrations by Enrique Olvera, Chef and Owner of Pujol Restaurant in Mexico City, Norman Van Aken, Chef and Owner of Norman’s in Miami, and Coque Ossio, Chef and Owner of a consortium of restaurants in Peru.

This year the Chicago Windy City Wine Festival is being held on September 5th and 6th at Daley Plaza downtown in Chicago. The Wine Festival starts on Friday evening at 4pm and goes until 10 pm. It continues on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm and is open until 10 pm again. Tickets are available to purchase for the Windy City Wine Festival Online at windycitywinefestival.com/buy.html or call 847-382-1480 to purchase them by phone.

Tickets are $25.00 for the wine tasting in advance and $30.00 each at the door. Additional tasting coupons can be purchased for more tasting at the festival for $5.00. There is even a designated driver ticket available for $10.00 which gets you 2 non-alcoholic drinks and food as well as access to cooking demonstrations and a copy of the festival program.  

They have also included live bands performing at the event to add to the relaxed atmosphere and they have brought in several local wine experts and Sommeliers to present information about choosing, buying and pairing wines with food as well as information about the wine making process.

It is interesting that even though the economy has slowed down people have certainly not stopped drinking wine. People have decided that buying cheaper food and clothing as well as saving energy were all bearable changes but the Chicagoans are not giving up their wine drinking. Wine sales have increased an enormous amount in the last decade thanks to movies like Sideways that made it a cool, independent, social and cultural hobby to have.

Chicago may not have any vineyards or be written about much in Wine Spectator but we have a lot of wine drinkers and buyers in the Chicagoland area. They have been a fan of the Chicago Wine Festival and the Naperville Wine festival the last few years. Also a few stores like Armanetti’s, Sam’s Wines and Spirits and Binny’s have made buying from huge selections of wine from all over the world possible under one roof for very affordable prices. Also, hundreds of small wind boutiques have popped up like Wine Expressions and Wine Styles in all the small shopping centers in the suburbs.

Yuppies and baby boomers liked taking a bottle of wine to dinner at a friend’s house or serving a new wine guests had never tried before at parties. This novelty as well as great taste has kept wine popular while other luxury items have trailed off in popularity since the economy has slowed down. New and Returning TV Series Fall Start Dates Schedule in Chicago - Mark Your Calendars Now! With just days to go until the official start of the 2008-2009 Television season, here is an updated listing of returning TV series and new season TV premiere dates. Also, the return of Deal or No Deal and debut of America’s Toughest Jobs, on NBC, started early this season on August 25th. So if there is not much happening in Chicago on weeknights this fall, there is a lot of new programming on TV. The Labor Day Weekend and Holiday Monday are so jam packed with events you won’t be able to stay home for long. Both in the City of Chicago and in the suburbs there are large events and parades happening in addition to all the shopping sales all over Chicagoland. The Chicago Jazz Festival is this weekend, the JayCees Naperville Last Fling and the Labor Day Parades are all day Monday. I know the weather will also be good this Labor Day Weekend, it should be in the upper 80’s and no rain is in the forecast.

First, on Friday at 5pm there is the monthly Critical Mass Bike ride through downtown and the streets of Chicago. Join up wiht them at Daley Plaza at 5pm if you want to ride along. There is a police escort at the front of the pack and bike riding helmets may be required….

The Chicago Jazz Festival is also this weekend in Grant Park. The 30th Annual Jazz Festival runs Thursday through Sunday.  In the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park they will be celebrating 30 years of jazz with two time Grammy Award winner Sonny Rollins. The admission to the Chicago Jazz Festival in Grant Park is Free! The Jazz Festival will run August 29-31 for three days of free music on three stages from 10:00 am-9:30 pm per day. No Dogs or Alcoholic beverages will be allowed in the festival. Michigan Avenue has been a shopping, vacation and hotel stay destination in the midwest for more than 100 years and features some of the most exclusive stores, luxurious hotels and hip fashion boutiques.Michigan Avenue holds the Chicago Water Tower, the Art Institute of Chicago, Millennium Park, and north of the Chicago River is known as the Magnificent Mile. The most popular hotels to stay at on Michigan avenue are the Hotel Intercontinental, The Drake Hotel and the Peninsula Hotel. All of these hotels are historic places where the wealthy have stayed while visiting Chicago for generations. All three hotels have ample accommodations, well appointed rooms and beautiful views of the city. When they were built they were some of the tallest buildings in Chicago, now they aren’t anymore with skyscrapers near by, but they still offer great views of Michigan Avenue and the Lake. The Drake Hotel and The Hotel Intercontinental also have very posh restaurants. The Peninsula Hotel Restaurants are even more regal, and I haven’t had a chance to stay there yet. Expect large marble entry ways and columns and bell hops that help you manage everything. Also expect high room rates for these hotels in season. In the summer the hotels on Michigan Avenue can be $200-$600.00 a night.  (depending on the room and the view) Off Season they might drop to $150 – 300.00 but the top penthouse floors are always over $1,000.00.

Historic Landmarks on Michigan Avenue in Chicago

The most well known historical landmark on Michigan Avenue in Chicago is the Water Tower that survived the great Chicago fire in 1871. The limestone that the Water Tower and the Pumping Station across the street are made from is a local Illinois quarry stone that saved those buildings from going up in flames. After the Chicago Fire Limestone and brick became very popular building materials.

Sweet Tomatoes is a casual dining restaurant that offers healthier low calorie foods than most dining places that are still very tasty. Sweet Tomatoes is somewhat new in Chicago and I had only previously heard of it from a friend who lives in Portland and raves about how much she loves to go there with her family.

I found out that there is Sweet Tomatoes restaurant in Chicagoland in Naperville-Aurora on Route 59 not far from Fox Valley Mall and I tried it out a few weeks ago.

I loved the food and the “sample-everything” setup of the restaurant. I liked it so much that we have been back to Sweet Tomatoes one other time since then. There are 6 Sweet Tomatoes restaurant locations in the Chicago suburbs now:

The food offered at Sweet Tomatoes is a cross between a salad bar and a buffet. That said they market the restaurants as healthy dining alternatives for families instead of a burger chain or a old country buffet.

So, when you go you still have to be conscious of how much you eat and what the calories are in the items you choose. That said you can have a really tasty dinner that has more vegetables and less fat than most restaurants offer.

The entry to the Sweet Tomatoes restaurant usually has a menu of large self serve salad bar full of fresh vegetablesimmediately where you walk in. They have pre-made salads and a selection of fresh cut vegetables and all the toppings you can dream of in addition to staples like potato salad and raisin-broccoli salad.

The dinner meal pricing is usually all you can eat for $9.95 per person plus drinks. So, this usually works out to about $13.00 per person with tax. For a couple of single people that is pretty affordable. For a family with a lot of kids that might get pretty expensive. 

What is nice is that you really can try anything you want, and if you don’t like it it’s no big deal and you can get something else. With kids and their picky palates this can be a good thing. There is different selections of pre-made salads, soup and pastas for lunch and dinner to mix things up.

The sweet tomatoes self serve salad bar ends at the cash register and for some reason they have you pay there. I would have thought just having the cash register at the door would have made more sense but they don’t set it up that way.

Then after you pay and take your tray of salad you see the rest of the restaurant contains fresh bread, soup, baked potatoes, chilli, deserts, pastas and drinks. So, then you get a few more plates of things to try. Luckily they have made the plates and bowls small so you can save room and try a variety of food.

I really enjoyed the Sweet Tomatoes strawberry lemonade, the Broccoli-Rasin Salad, the wonton salad and the cobb salad. The fresh bead with cheese on top was great, as was the make your own sundae bar. The chocolate and vanilla fat free frozen yogurt they have is a low calorie treat, but you have to be careful with toppings and brownies adding a lot of calories to your dinner.

Overall all the foods offered at sweet tomatoes is very good and leaves a lot of choice to the individual. If you want to find out more about their menu you can download it here from the site. 

The thing you also have to watch is how many plates you get and things you try. The employees are very good at busing plates right as soon as you finish something and it has been proven in studies that people eat about 30% more when the plates and remnants of the meal are removed and not in eyesight. It is a visual queue for your stomach to say it’s full when the table is full of empty plates. When the plates are removed immediatley people generally stretch things further. But aside from that I think Sweet Tomatoes is great and I plan on going back again soon.

The Chicago Bears did not have the best pre-season but since they are our home football team we still hope for the best. Lovey Smith and the Bears have a lot of work to do this season to get things together and win some games. I may be watching more this year because I have been roped into playing Fantasy Football with my boyfriend’s online Yahoo league. The draft was last week and we will see where the games net out in a few weeks. I don’t feel like I have much chance of winning but it might make the Bears Games on TV a little more interesting and exciting since I have some players on my own team now.

If you plan on seeing the Bears play football live at Soldier Field I hear there are still tickets available, but for those December games plan on layering up with the coats because it gets so cold in Chicago. The Gay Pride Parade is an annual tradition in Chicago. The parade draws thousands of proud GLBT community members and local visitors who enjoy the parade and festivities while they support the freedom to be out and be proud in Chicago. I have gone to see the Gay Pride Parade in Chicago, although not for a few years now, and it was a lot of fun and laughs and quite the party. (I distinctly remember the altoids) I do think it is an entertaining and open event for both straight and gay people and can be very entertaining for everyone if you keep an open mind. But then again, that is exactly what the gay pride parade is all about, open-mindedness. (think Eddie Izzard)

We need to keep the openness idea rolling in Chicago, we are pretty close to middle America and some people here really don’t embrace the open culture idea, but events and public awareness like this has changed the gay community in Chicago over the years. In fact everywhere I have worked over the last 10 years there have been a number of open and out gay professionals in the department and company. The companies embraced these differences and it was totally accepted to see significant others at company social events and the companies also provided benefits for these significant others. Now high schools have openly gay groups for teens and things are much more acceptable to be talked about in general. I admit I am not an expert on the gay community in Chicago, but even I have noticed that things have come a long way in the last 10 or 20 years!

If you want to see the 39th annual Gay & Lesbian Pride Parade in Chicago this year here is some info you will need. It is of course free to see the parade, but if you are driving in to the city, expect parking to be difficult to find and you will probably have to pay to park and then walk from a few blocks away. The map below shows the parade route and it starts in Boystown at Clark, Belmont and Halsted and ends at Diversey in Lincoln Park. The gay pride parade begins at 12 noon and usually goes until 2pm or longer. With 250 floats and many groups to see it takes a while. According to the official parade site chicagopride.com over 400,000 people attend the parade every year.  After the parade many people have parties locally and visitors from out of town usually like to do some shopping in the area. All in all it is a fun thing to do in Chicago this weekend.

Naperville Ribfest has become one of the largest suburban summer festivals in Chicago. It has been running for at least 20 years and the Ribfest has grown to now include major music acts along with great ribs from all over the country.

The thing that makes the Naperville Ribfest so attractive for both businesses and local residents is that it is in the suburbs and there are over 128,000 people living in Naperville and many more in towns of similar size around it. All these families with kids get something fun to do over the July 4th weekend and advertisers and entertainers love to be in front of them.

Over 1 million people go through the Naperville Ribfest over the 4th of July weekend. With that in mind save yourself some time and park in the 5th Avenue Metra Station lot and take the shuttles they have running every 10 minutes to the Ribfest. Otherwise there is no aprking within 1 mile of the fest. It is actually located in Knoch park behind Edwards Hospital but the hospital parking lot is off limits too. All the street parking was full by 3pm in the afternoon when we went too.

We suburbanites live 1 hour or more southwest of Chicago so the Taste of Chicago isn’t really an option for us with the awful traffic Chicago has these days. Plus if you live locally walking or biking to the Naperville Ribfest makes it more community friendly and less like the big city. The festival tries to be kid friendly and family friendly but local high school and college kids enjoy the Ribfest too.

Here is some helpful information about  the Naperville Ribfest schedule, rib restaurants selling food there and the events that weekend. 2009

The competition for best ribs prizes is Fierce! Last year Uncle Bubs was voted best in the Naperville Ribfest and Armadillo’s won best Sauce. I think that those plus Sweet Baby Ray’s will be the best ones to check out first because it may be impossible to try them all unless you plan on eating lunch and dinner there every day of the festival. There are other food and drink vendors there at the fest too. You can always count on Oberweis for some great ice cream and root beer floats.

If you come to Naperville Ribfest for the food, stay for the music. They have brought nationally known bands and acts to the suburbs for years and this year is no different. There are 2 stages; the Main Stage (Heart, Sarah Evans, Todd Rundgren and Huey Louis and the News) and the Brian R Schultz Rock and Roll Stage (Blue Oyster Cult, North Mississippi All Stars, WAR, Herman’s Hermits with Peter Noone) plus there is also a BP Family Area that has a lot of fun activities for the kids. Some tips for making your trip to the Naperville Ribfest more fun:

1. If you drive be prepared to walk because parking fills up in downtown Naperville quickly and you end up parking far away. Wear comfortable shoes. Park in the 5th Avenue Metra station lot off Washington and take the shuttle to the fest.

2. Buy your tickets in advance through the Ribfest web site or pre-sale tickets locally in downtown Naperville at the Jewel Grocery Food Stores and save $2.00 per ticket. Otherwise it is $10.00 at the gate and there are usually long lines.

3. Bring the kids, your appetite and stay for the music and entertainment all evening long. Here is a Map of the events and locations of the Naperville Ribfest.

4. The Ribfest will close if when it is raining there is any Lightning. At that time the park will close and everyone will be asked to leave for safety reasons. It is very very crowded and everyone just sits on the ground with their ribs to eat. So bring handy wipes for your fingers or get them at the Sweet Baby Ray’s station.

Every Saturday morning there are free Yoga, Pilates, Dance fitness and Tai Chi workout classes downtown in Chicago at Millennium Park on the lawn of the Pritzker Pavilion from 8am to 11am. What better way to start your day and your weekend than outside in the sunshine getting exercise and working on improving your health? These classes are run by the professional instructors of the Lakeshore Athletic Club (at Illinois Center). The classes are brought to Chicago free of charge courtesy of McDonald’s. (their way of offering a way to work off all the fat in their food?) Anyway, the classes look like a lot of fun, and I may try one this week since I come downtown for work anyway on Saturdays some weeks. It is supposed to be quite a sight with 300-400 people all doing exercises at the same time together on the lawn of Millennium park. It is a great community event in Chicago and hopefully also impacts the overall health of the citizens of Chicago. This is a morning schedule of fun and fitness.

There are regularly scheduled free Yoga in the Park classes at 8 am that focus on balance, flexibility, strength and overall health.

At 9 AM there are free Pilates classes on the lawn of the Pritzker Pavillion. Work on your core muscle strength, posture and flexibility like a pro.

Then at 10 Am there are free Dance workouts taught by some of the same dancers you see at Dance Chicago or Summerdance. The schedule is as follows : 

The Amaniyea Payne of Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago will teach the class on June 7, 14, 21 and 28. They offer an energizing African dance workshop where you move to the beat of the drum as you enjoy this cultural experience with live musicians.

The Hip-Hop Wake-Up Call will be taught by the Culture Shock Dance Troupe on July 5, 12, 19 and 26.
Dancers of all levels and ages are invited to learn the latest hip-hop moves from Chicago’s premier hip-hop dance troupe featured in Dance Chicago for many years.

Salsa! Salsa! Salsa! with Lisa La Boriqua on Saturdays in August 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. Enjoy dance fitness through Latin dances with this red hot mix of Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Cumbia and Cha Cha Cha. This one is hot!

Additionally, there are some bonus workout fitness classes scheduled before and after these times just for extra fun. You can choose to go to them all or just pick one or two that you think you would be ready for. You can also watch the class to see if you learn any new moves to use in your workout at home during the week. It is all applicable for home use since no equipment or materials are required for the classes. Just bring a notebook and write down the moves you want to use at home and keep a list for your exercise plan there.

The TAI CHI bonus class is at 7 am on the first Saturdays of each month, June 7, July 5, August 2 and September 6. Come out extra early for the elegant ancient Chinese soft martial art that has brought peace and discipline to people for centuries.

The BODY COMBAT™ class is at 9 am on July 19th. Les Mills and master trainer, Josef Matthews, leads a fiercely energetic program, inspired by many martial arts and is drawn from a wide array of disciplines, including Karate, boxing, Taekwondo, Tai Chi and Muay Thai. Its a total body workout.

Chicago may be known for being one of the fattest cities in America but it doesn’t have to only be about hot dogs, hamburgers and deep dish pizza. Chicago can also be a healthy community that comes together to workout, have fun and learn new things each week if you take part in this event. So, do something good for yourself this Saturday (instead of sleeping in) and come out to Millennium Park for your free workout courtesy of McDonald’s and the City of Chicago.

I am so excited to see that August Osage County has won 4 Tony Awards this year since it is an amazing play that had it’s start right here in Chicago at the Steppenwolf Theater. I saw this shocking and yet riveting play last summer in 2007 in it’s run at Steppenwolf Theater on the north side of Chicago.  What is interesting is that there are so few new plays being written and performed these days and this one competes with the classics and really is a gripping quality piece of theater.

When I saw August: Osage County was transfixed for 3+ hours as the lives of this extended family unraveled right in front of our very eyes. It is somehow relate-able in the beginning of the play but by mid-play you know something very different is going on here and you buckle your seat-belt for a bumpy ride.

Anyway, I know it’s not regular for me to post 3 times in a day, but I wanted to post this since it is from a local great writer Tracy Letts who has another play running right now at Steppenwolf Theater. It seems like Chicago is back on the map for great original works and great quality theater again.

Everyone is getting into the Halloween spirit now that the holiday is only about 2 weeks away! This includes lots of office Halloween candy, Pumpkins everywhere, costume shopping and the annual trek to your local Haunted House. If you live in the city of Chicago or are going downtown to the loop, you can visit the Daley Plaza and see the local events happening there leading up to and celebrating all things ghoulish and spooky this Halloween.

The ChicagoWeen Haunted Village in Daley Plaza opened October 12th and will be there until the 31st and the Halloween Madness has ended. The events there are a FREE gift from the City of Chicago and the Mayor’s Office of Special Events. (they really like holidays there)  Haunted Village continues through Halloween open diring the hours of Monday through Wednesday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.   

Daley Plaza (at Washington and Dearborn) hosts the Haunted Village and is transformed into Pumpkin Plaza, with cute pumpkin decorating, spooky storytellers and more to thrill and chill. Each day there are performances from the high flying aerial entertainers, Midnight Circus: 11:30 am, 12:30 pm and 2 pm Thursday through Sunday includes evening shows scheduled at 5:30 pm and 7 pm Free pumpkin decorating is offered on Saturdays and Sundays (except for the parade day, Saturday, October 20) from 11 am to 2 pm (or while supplies last).

And there is even a new Halloween Parade in Chicago this year. The Go Green Halloween Parade is on State Street Saturday October 20th from State and Randolph at 12 Noon. It features lots of candy and costumes (come in costume with the kids) The parade route begins at State and Randolph, going south on State Street, West on Madison, North at Dearborn, ending at Daley Plaza at Dearborn and Washington. Join Mayor Spookenburger from the Midnight Circus as they spread the news of the importance of Chicago’s environmental movement. After the parade, kids can enjoy trick-or-treating, a performance by Midnight Circus, hayrides, a costume contest and special sneak performances by the WICKED cast members. Remember, WICKED loves Halloween.
