November Events in Chicago

If you’re looking for things to do in Chicago before the Black Friday Sales start, here is my list this year:

chicago-thanksgivingday-parade-turkey-float-balloon1. Dance Chicago - November 6 to November 29 The 14th annual, month-long fest of dance at Athenaeum Theatre. I recommend this dance festival whether you are a dancer or not, they feature the most creative and talented dancers in Chicago.

2. SOFA - International Exposition of Sculpture Objects and Functional Art
An enticing exploration of functional arts held at Navy Pier. Ok so this is a high end arts exhibition and sale. Maybe not for everyone. But go if you want to be inspired or find the most unique piece for your home. It will be at Festival Hall @ Navy Pier this year. $15 admission, open from 11am to 8pm Nov 7-9th 2010.

3. Macy’s Holiday Windows & 103rd Great Tree Lighting Ceremony with Katharine McPhee - The State Street Store Macy’s (111 N. State) unveils it’s famous holiday window displays for 2010 and the 45-foot Walnut Room Christmas tree (now with LED lights) at 12 Noon on Saturday November 6th.  Check it out with the family on the 7th floor at Noon.

4. Christmas Around the World - The Museum of Science and Industry’s popular holiday event will help the museum celebrate its 75th year. The great thing about going this year is that they have updated a lot of other exhibits in the Museum so it is more worth the trip to see Science Storms also. (avoid the “Net” exhibit though, very 1996).

5. Millennium Park Ice Rink Opens for the Season - It is a great family holiday tradition to go skating in Millennium Park and it’s great exercise to work off the extra holiday bakery. This rink opens in November and stays open until about mid-March every year. Located on Michigan Avenue.

6. Radio City Xmas Spectacular with the Rockettes If you have never been to Radio City Music Hall in New York City, you can see the show here in Chicago too.

7. A Christmas Carol at the Goodman Theatre - Another family tradition to see in person instead of just in old movies.

8. Magnificent Mile Lights Festival - Saturday, November 20 This Chicago parade starts the official shopping and the season on Michigan Avenue. See live performances by Allstar Weekend presented by Radio Disney, KT Tunstall presented by 101.9fm THE MIX. 11AM – 3PM and it is free.

9. Thanksgiving Day Parade - Thursday, November 25 @ 8:30 AM on State Street from Congress to Randolph We have a Thanksgiving Day Parade right here in Chicago. New York has nothing on this one.

10. Winter Flower Show at Garfield Park Conservatory - Garfield Park Conservatory’s holiday flower show is stunning. This begins in the last week of November and runs through December. No admission but donations appreciated.

11. Also, Reyka Vodka, the first-ever vodka distilled in Iceland, is wrapping up a sweepstakes December 1st which will allow ten lucky Reyka fans to win an all expense paid trip for two to Iceland, during which they can discover this unique country and spend some time with some of Iceland’s most renowned cultural Icons, as they explore their passion for art, design, adventure, or music. Halloween Weekend in Chicago

halloween at Daley plaza2It is finally here! All the Halloween costumes are ready and the giant bowl of candy has already been snacked on all month long. (or since August when it showed up in the supermarket and Walgreens isles) It is Halloween weekend in Chicago and there is a lot more to do this year with the holiday falling on a Saturday. I have links below to some lists of places to go and things to do in Chicago to get the full two day Halloween experience. One note of caution though: It will be cold! We have had evenings in the 30′s the last few days, so while the daytime may be in the 50′s the nights will be very cold. Bundle up if you plan on being outside trick-or-treating or going to and from parties.

1. The list of Chicago Park District Events. Maybe some kid friendly activities right in your own backyard?

2. The Freaky Scary Movie Listfrom Chicagoist. If scary is more your Halloween than sweet. And yes, Rocky Horror Picture Show is on the list.

3. Navy Fear at Navy Pier. It is a ways out there to drive or connect via bus, but they’ve done the haunted house thing on Navy Pier this year.

4. Zombie-tastic Six Flags Fright Fest is happening if you like haunted houses and stomach tossing rides all at the same time.

5. The Top 10 Haunted Houses listed this year by HauntedHousesChicago.com on a map. Kind of a difficult site to read, thank goodness for Google Maps.

6. Some last minute clever yet simple Halloween Costume Ideas for those of us that are procrastinators and don’t want to spend $100 on a costume this year or be a Chilean Miner. (hey it’s still a recession ok?)

Have a fun and SAFE Halloween this year!  Remember to keep your cats and dogs indoors and away from anyone playing pranks and use battery powered lights in pumpkins and never use real flame or candles in them because of the risk of fires.

Chicago Weekend Fun Redesign

ScreenShot Blog ChiccagoWe have given the Chicago Weekend Fun Blog a refreshing new Wordpress theme and we’re pretty pleased with the results. We have also made some changes to our webhosting solution for a more efficient site. When this blog was launched about three years ago everything was plug-and-play in the blog world and it has changed. That is why it took so long to get an update completed! We did have to ask for some help from our webhosting provider at TeamITS.com to make formatting modifications to the theme code and to upgrade the webhosting solutions. We’re glad they are so willing to jump in and help bloggers like me with coding and updating their websites because We’re not about to give up blogging because a few technical difficulties are in the way. We highly recommend ITS if you are looking for a partner in your website development or a new web-host.

One our favorite features of this new Twenty Ten wordpress theme is the header images. We’ve removed the stock images that came with the theme and uploaded some of our own pictures taken in the last few years around Chicago. (there is another theme called NeoClassical that has a similar look with rotating header images also) We’re proud that these photos are finally really useful on the site because they were taken at times touring the city and enjoying all the wonderful entertainment and culture that the city has to offer. We are also looking to feature other photographer’s work in the header image and if you have photos you would like to share, please contact us through the online form in the links at the right.

As always, thanks for reading and supporting our blog. There is always more to discover in Chicago.
