During the early period of Gorbachev reformation, we visited Russia.

One evening, my wife and her friends went to see Bolshoy ballet. But, I remained at the hotel to attend at a scheduled political forum by Russian young people for my own enlightenment. Regretfully it was canceled. One member took a street tour. He robbed by street gangs, robbed his wrist watch and wallet. His shirt was torn out. Luckily he was not seriously injured. We felt “It was not yet a safe country for tourist to visit.”

Recently many saw the horror show that the Chicago street gang beat an honor student to dead with sticks. No help for the victim came from the police.

The people of Olympic world saw the horror show on TV or wireless.

It is questionable if the city police could have been able to protect adequately the foreign visitors to the game.

Under the circumstances, the Olympic Committee in Copenhagen denied to offer the game opportunity to Chicago as they believed that many would not happily send their loving sons and daughters to the game in the chilling horror city.

The leaders must change the city image first and then welcome another game in the near future. Yes, you can do it, just work hard in every way.

Can't somebody make sure the IOC gets a copy of the front page of today's Chicago Tribune? Does the IOC know about the drunk cop who just got off with no jail time, after a vicious assault on a petite female bartender? How about the drunk cop who recently rearended a car stopped on the Dan Ryan, causing an explosion that killed 2 young men? How about any of a dozen other stories about the shameful behavior of the Chicago Police Dept., and the fact that the cops are above the law? Has anyone pointed any of this out to the IOC?

GOOD FOR YOU!!! It's refreshing to hear some sense in this all, everyone is so concerned with the money we'll make, how about the money we'll lose?!? CHicago has ENOUGH PROBLEMS, children getting shot on their way home from school every day, and we need to focus on them, before inviting the world into our city.

HI Im am 14 years old And I totally agree with you,we are going to "waste" over 5 billion dollars for a few days of fun.I would rather spend that money on education and our financial crisis. We already owe 3 billion dollars thanks to TODD STROGER and there a lot homeless people who cant get a job because of their little knowledge thanks to not being able to afford to go to school and buy their supplies.

Your comments are very well thought out, but I disagree with the premise that money spent on the 2016 Olympics would otherwise go to fund other more pressing projects. Most of the funds will come from private fundraising, corporate giving, sponsorships, TV revenue and other non-governmental sources. Of course, there will be some improvements that the governments at various levels will pay for. But, there are lasting benefits as well. Perhaps not the stadiums, but there will be both tangible and intangible benefits.

As a suburban dweller myself, I strongly support the effort to land the 2016 Olympics.

I appreciate the comment, but I hardly think that the improvements would be worth the cost when at just the cost of the improvements alone we aren't willing to pay for it now. Why does it take the cost of the Olympics and all it's stadiums and accomodations to get us to fix something so necessary for every day life and not that expensive in comparison?

I appreciate your perspective and would like to offer the possibility that if Chicago is chosen to host The Olympics, at least one of these issues (transportation) will be brought to the forefront. If chosen, you would see great improvements and additions to the existing transit system, and it would all happen eons faster than normal.

No, it probably won't make our schools better and it won't shelter the homeless (except for those 17 days when they will be swept off the streets), but The Olympics would be a sparkplug for improving the quality of life around the city.
