Second City Training Center Conservatory Program Shows
I was lucky enough to attend the Second City Training Center’s Conservatory program last year and I lasted through class levels 1a, 1b, 2 and 3 and 2 auditions. I dropped out before the class session #4 started because I was in over my head and I had a day job that I had to maintain for a lifetime, rather than make a living in comedy. But I learned some valuable lessons in these classes and will always look back on that time with positivity and remember the foundations of Improv when I look at comedy on TV and in Movies.
Here are the 2 graduation shows from the classes that I was in (for a short time) a long time ago. These people may be in classes but they are not amateurs at comedy or acting. Many have been acting for 10+ years and doing improv for 5 years or more. This is a tough program and the inside jokes that named the shows call attention to the relationship these instructors have with their students and the odd but fun atmosphere they create. Look for the players in these shows to be famous and on SNL in a few years, they are very funny and the future of Improv and Comedy in Chicago.
Both shows have a format of short blackout scenes with punchlines mixed with longer comedic sketch scenes. Most of the material has been developed from improvising in class and writing scenes from the exploratory improvised form. The shows run back to back with 1 other class. Each show is about 45 minutes long and it’s only $5 dollars to see all three. (tickets can only be bought in person at the box office) They are scheduled through December and January in the Second City ETC Theater at 8pm. (in Piper’s Alley on North Ave and Wells in Chicago on the 2nd floor) Go check them out for some great laughs!
