Cook County Proposed 4$ Phone Tax, Electric Tax & Gas Tax

Cook County is looking to add new taxes on phone, gas and electric bills of consumers. The most contested new tax is the one for $4.00 added to everyone’s phone bill.  don;t know when the last time was that you looked at the details of your phone bill (especially if you have auto pay by credit card)  but there are already a bunch of taxes on there now. I looked up my land line bill and see that there are $12.00 worth of taxes and government fees already there:

Local Federal Access Charge: $4.50
Local 911 Emergency System: $1.00
Local State Infrastructure and Maintenance Fee: $0.12
Local State Additional Charges: $0.02
Local Federal Universal Service Fee: $0.49
Local IL Universal Service Fee $0.07
Local IL Telecom Relay Service and Equipment Fee $0.06
Local Federal Tax at 3% $0.70
Local Illinois Tax at 7% $1.62
Local Municipal Telecommunications Tax $1.39
Long Distance Carrier Cost Recovery Fee $0.99
Long Distance Fed Universal Service Fund $0.25
Long Distance IL State Infrastructure MaintenanceRecov Fee $0.03
Long Distance IL USF Surcharge $0.01
Long Distance State Tax $0.34
Long Distance Municipal Tax $0.30

**With another $4.00 for Cook County this will be $16.00 in Taxes on a $19.00 monthly phone package!!! **

This is INSANE. Why should I pay almost double my phone bill because someone wants tax revenue for their pet project?? And this doesn’t even include the cell phone taxes and surcharges.

If you are as upset about this as I am go to the site NoPhoneTax.org and email the politicians about your opposition and work to make sure this does not get passed. It is too much money and no one can afford to tax things so much that it doubles your bill every month.
